Mattie Elizabeth Newby

MRS. MATTIE ELIZABETH NEWBY, daughter of the late Ernest and Lucille Barnes Newby was born April 20, 1943 in Mecklenburg County, VA and departed this life January 13, 2022 in Heritage Hall Nursing Home, Blackstone, VA. She was also preceded in death by her seven siblings- Laura Newby, Pearline Stephenson, Lula McCollum, Henry, Harry, Leroy, and Ernest “Jimmy” Newby.
At an early age she was baptized and joined Jerusalem Baptist Church. Mattie was a faithful member of the Usher Board, Choir, and Missionary until her health began to fail.
She was a graduate of the former East End High School, South Hill, VA.
Mattie was employed by Scoville Factory, Victoria, VA for many years until she became disabled.
Her activities included going to church and going to the Hazelwood House for community activities with other patients.
Mattie leaves to mourn a daughter- Marlene Newby of South Hill, VA.; grandson- Aaron (Jazmine) Newby of Newport News, VA; two great-grands- La’Miya McLaurin and Amir J. Newby; one sister- Ellah Newby of Kenbridge, VA; aunt- Lillie Mae Newby of Brooklyn, NY; devoted nieces- Yolanda Wallace and Denise McBride; devoted great nieces and nephews- Joshua (Kierra) McCollum, Kristen Wallace, and Quaran Newby; devoted cousin- Reverend Sharon Baskerville and a host of other relatives and friends.
