With an infectious smile, always positive attitude and kind heart, Maurice was well known for being helpful, loving and dependable. A family-oriented man, he always provided guidance and compassion for those he knew and for strangers. No matter the situation, Maurice would always lend a sympathetic ear and provide his own unique quote to sum up a situation. “Having someone help you does not mean you have failed, it means that you are not in it alone,” was often quoted by Maurice and remains relevant even today.
Besides being a budding philosopher, Maurice enjoyed cooking, driving his prized Slingshot and spending copious amounts of time with family and friends. If he wasn’t feeding someone, he was giving someone something to nourish their body, mind or soul. He would always offer financial advice. Often a cheerful giver, Maurice would say “Blessings are given and Blessings are received. If you don’t like the Blessings you receive, try adjusting the Blessings that you give.” It is with that same sentiment that Maurice lived his life.
Maurice always felt the need to be of service to others, so he entered the United States Air Force on November 29, 1988 and devoted twenty-four years to serving our country which included two combat tours in Iraq and Qatar. During his active duty years, he specialized in Operations Management and he retired as Master Sergeant. He also earned several medals and badges, including the Air Force Organizational Excellence Award and Humanitarian Service Award and held a Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Education.
Retiring in December 2012, Maurice rejoined the workforce as a Federal Government Civilian working in Wounded Warriors, Homeland Security, and his most recent job as a Human Resource Specialist at JBSA Randolph AFB.
A man of many talents, Maurice also became known for creating military shadow boxes and was an avid photographer, always taking photos to capture special moments. He appreciated the beauty in all things and encouraged everyone to follow whatever dream they may possess. He would often say, “To never have a thought is to never have a dream. To never have a dream is to never really live. Live as big as you dream!”
He departed this life and transitioned into his eternal life on Thursday, January 27, 2022. Preceding him in death is his father Norris Barfield and brother-in-law Curry Atterberry. Maurice leaves behind his wife Cindy, whom he married in 2018.
