Tallahassee - Malcolm Quincy Barnes, 83 died peacefully at home surrounded by family and loved ones on January 28, 2022. He was born June 29, 1939 in St. Louis, Missouri to John Bolden and Ann Edmond. He joins his cherished wife Barbara in heaven to whom he was married from October 22, 1968 until her passing August 8, 2018.

Malcolm was a proud Christian and devout keeper of Jesus' faith. He and Barbara were proud to be giving members of Bethel Missionary Baptist church since the family arrived to Tallahassee in 1972. Malcolm became a deacon in 2019. The church's Senior Care Ministry was renamed to the honor Barbara and Malcolm Barnes Senior Care Ministry in 2020 in recognition of their tireless and cheerful contributions and support of ALL of Bethel's ministries and community outreach efforts.

Preceded by his parents (John Bolden, Ann Edmond Reno) and his wife Barbara, Malcolm is survived by his granddaughter Lauren Elain, sons Martin (Alison), Marcus (Lindsay), Travis (Yolanda) Payton; sisters Doris (John) Brinker, Sondra Reno, Petral Stephens; sisters-in-law Wanda Johnson and Monica Kininessi, Rita Burrell; brothers John (Renee) Bolden, Alvin Bolden, Calvin Bolden, Ira (Pearl) Barnes, Carl Reno, Connie Reno, John Reno, Frederick Reno; brothers-in-law Vincent (Marcy) Burrell, Cornelius Burrell, Dexter Burrell, Roland Burrell, Broderick Burrell; nephews Wyndell Johnson, John (Allison) Bolden III, Evan Bolden; niece Tausha (Paul) Harland; enduring friends Diane Townsend, Jimmie Franklin, Cecil Higgs, Henry Johnson, Ray & Adonna Mobley, Seward & Denice Hamilton, James Howard, Joe & Caroline Gruen, Pastor Ulmer Marshall, Zellene Smith and a host of former colleagues, students and mentees.

Malcolm became a brother of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. in 1958 at the Delta Phi Chapter of Jackson State College and greatly enjoyed of 60 years of friendship and fellowship as well as with members of Tallahassee's Gamma Mu Lambda chapter.

Malcolm Barnes received his Bachelors of Science degree from Jackson State College (now University) in 1960 and his Master's of Science from the University of Iowa in 1963. In addition to corporate internships and research with Xerox and IBM, Malcolm was Datacenter manager and assistant professor at Jackson State College from 1966 to 1972. In 1972 became Datacenter Director at FAMU until 1978. From 1978 to 1985 was manager of education technology systems at the Florida Department of Education including the design and implementation of a college student curriculum and course planning system. From 1985 to his retirement, Malcolm served as associate professor and chairman of Computer Information Systems at FAMU. He was most passionate about the opportunity to assist students in achieving their dreams as technology professionals.

A memorial service will be at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church at 12 pm Monday, February 7, 2022 at 12 pm.
