He was an active member of Tyner United Methodist Church throughout his life, and heavily involved in the workings of his community. He graduated from Tyner High School in 1959, and from the University of Tennessee (Knoxville) in 1964, where he was a co-op student, with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked for Combustion Engineering and ICI America in Chattanooga.
He is survived by his brother, Porter W. (Frances) Johnson of Oak Park Illinois, by two sons, Samuel G (Jenny) and Michael W. Johnson of Chattanooga, Tennessee, by five grandchildren Tyler, Orion, Greta, Lila, and Lucy Johnson, and by several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service and the receiving of family and friends will be held at a later date. A private interment will occur at Silverdale Cemetery with immediate family.
