Georgia Finney

Passed 02/26/2022

Mrs. Georgia Boykins Finney, 85, was born near Polkville in Cleveland County, NC on January 29, 1937 to the late Waymon and Mary Shade Boykins. She left to rest in eternity with our loving Lord and Savior on Saturday, February 26, 2022 at her home on 1905 Petty Rd. Kingstown, NC. Georgia attended Carver School in Spindale, NC stopping only to act as cook for her sharecropping family. She married at a young age and spent 46 years as the wife of the late Charlie Finney. To this union eight children were born. For years Georgia was an excellent homemaker. She worked at Shelby Plastics for a short time before working at PPG Industries in Shelby for 24 years. For a brief time she worked at PPG while also serving as the proud owner and operator of Georgia’s Country Kitchen which she operated passionately for over 30 years, retiring when her health began to fail in January, 2020.

Georgia was a faithful and longtime member of the Macedonia Baptist Church of Kingstown where she used her many talents serving as Choir leader and President, Kitchen Committee President, Missionary President, Vacation Bible School Teacher, and Sunday School and Church Secretary. Georgia enjoyed traveling as representative to both the Gold Hill and the Ebenezer Baptist Association conventions. Georgia had a knack for decorating and used her resources to provide flower arrangements, decor and furnishings to uplift God’s house. She was an excellent seamstress and often sewed outfits for choir anniversaries.

Georgia was a pillar in the Kingstown Community serving a term on the town council. She was a former member of the NAACP and Eastern Star and was a member of a gospel singing group. She also trained to become a community EMT. She was an excellent cook, and people came from near and far to eat at her restaurant. Georgia was also a gardener blessed with a greenthumb. She could make anything grow to its full potential. She loved shopping at antique stores, traveling the country to attend Finney Family reunions, designing her yard and dressing to the “T.” She loved clothes and had shoes and hats to match nearly every outfit. She loved working in her yard and perennially won the Kingstown Christmas decorations contest.

Georgia had a no nonsense approach to life and did not mince words. She made her points clear and there was no misunderstanding of where she stood on a particular matter. Her faith in God and love for her church spilled over to her children. She loved family and hosted a New Years celebration to bring them together. In addition to her parents and husband, Georgia is preceded in death by her son Jimmy Louis Finney and eldest daughter Patricia Ann Rudisill, her brothers J.W. Boykins, James Boykins, LC Boykins and Charles Boykins, her sisters Hattie Jay Johnson and Lizzie Mae Toms. She is survived by her children Edward Finney of the home, Janice Harbison, Pamela Boyce (TL), Charline Finney, Pauline Merritt (Wayne), and Douglas Finney (Alva) all of Shelby; grandchildren Stoney Finney of Boiling Springs, Tiantra Brooks (Lamont), Shamar Finney, Jerrin Finney, Tia Boyce, Jasmine Harbison, Hannah Merritt all of Shelby, Taylor Harbison of Charlotte NC and Jadin Merritt of Raleigh, NC; five great grandchildren Damarius Finney, Jayla Camp, and Tai Boyce of Shelby and Braxton and Braylen Finney of Boiling Springs; two great-great grandchildren Jace Camp and Jayden Finney of Shelby; three sisters Bernice Toms of Shelby, Dorothy Boykins and Mary Beam of Spindale; two brothers Donald Boykins and Paul Boykins of Spindale; one brother in law Willis Finney of Philadelphia, PA; a host of nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
