Charles became a resident of Greensboro, N.C. at a very early age when he came to live with his Aunt Ethel. He eventually became employed at Lanes Laundry and Dry Cleaners where he worked as the manager for many years. He later married Carolyn Courts Black with whom he fathered 4 children: Carolyn Ann (Abdul), Beverly Elaine Black (deceased), James “JC” Black, Jr. and Anthony Black, all of Greensboro, NC.
Charles was later united in marriage to Gladys Wiley Black and became “Dad” to 5 more children: Devetta Silver, Wanda Callahan (Clay) of Chicago, Paulette Williamson (Terry) Barbara Silver and Barry Black (Petrola). In 1976 he moved his family from Greensboro to Sedalia, NC. Where he became a business owner, having opened the first Black-owned fish market along with his friend Almond Scott. Charles later worked in maintenance for the McDonalds corporation and was a Deacon and a faithful member of Word of Life Church for many years until his health began to decline.
He was predeceased by his sisters Emma R. Black, Mildred Louella Black, and Dora Black, and by his brothers Jerry Black, Willie Black, Billy Ray Black and Carl J. Black. He leaves one sister, Carolyn Black Hicks, his 8 children, his grandchildren Trenton, Deanna, Crystal, Monique, Brian, Sierra, LaToya, Cameron, Tyler, Jordan, and Aaron to cherish his memory along with a host of nieces and nephews, great grandchildren, co-workers and friends.
A graveside service honoring his life will be held on Tuesday, March 8, 2022 at 1:00 at the Bethany Church Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 12:00 pm.
Interment : Bethany Church Cemetery.
