On the 10th of August, 1938, in the Alpine community of rural Talladega County, Alabama, Savannah “Bud” Garrett and Artencius Nix Garrett welcomed a son they named Detrolia to their family.

Mr. Garrett was a lifelong member of St. Campbell Missionary Baptist Church. During his tenure, Detrolia has served as the chairman of the Deacon board, member of the Trustee board and president of Choirs 1 and 2. He also used his vocal gift to sing with the Silver Stars. Mr. Garrett completed his education in the community school and found a career with the Birmingham Housing Authority. On September 30, 1961, Detrolia took the hand of the former Mary Barclay in holy matrimony and together they became the proud parents of five children. During his spare time, Detrolia enjoyed singing, hunting and fishing. When his name was mentioned, people also associated him with his gardening skills which captured their attention especially for the size of the greens he would grow.

On the morning of Sunday, April 24, 2022, Detrolia had gotten tired from his labors here on Earth. The Lord took notice of his worn frame and decided that it was time for him to rest in his arms. He was preceded in passing by his parents, Savannah Garrett, Sr. and Artencius Garrett; and seventeen siblings, S. V. Garrett, W. T. Garrett, Thomas Garrett, Clarence Garrett, Julius Hutchinson, Katie Calhoun, Alfruth “Head” Garrett, Gertrude Garrett McKenzie, Ruth Garrett, Moody Garrett, Daniel Keith, John Willie Keith, Sr., M. C. Keith, Salonia Garrett, Irene Garrett Morris, Annie Laura Welch and Janie “Tee” Garrett.

Detrolia leaves his loving wife of 60 years, Mary Garrett of Alpine, Alabama; five children, Tracy (Frank) Lawson of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Connie Hutchinson of Huntsville, Alabama, Detrolia (Ella) Garrett, Jr. of McDonough, Georgia, Quincy (Sarah) Garrett of Lincoln, Alabama and Tony (Tamara) Garrett of Montgomery, Alabama; twelve grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; one sister, Minnie Jones of Alpine, Alabama; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
