Obituary For Bessie Hartgrove

Mrs. Bessie Wood Hartgrove entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, April 26, 2022 at her residence in Shelby, NC. She was born on May 25, 1926 in Cherokee County, SC to the late Eliphus Wood and the late Bessie Goode Wood.

Mrs. Hartgrove along with her family moved to Cleveland County, NC at a very young age. She attended and graduated from Camp High School where she was a player on the Girls’ Basketball team helping her team qualify for a state championship game in one of the years she played. Always a hard working individual throughout her life, she was formerly employed with Bethware, East and James Love Elementary Schools, Universal Manufacturing, finally retiring at the young age of 90 from assisting with a family.

Mrs. Hartgrove was a member of C.F. Jerusalem of God for over 70 years where she was a former church secretary, kitchen committee member and a member of the missionary board. Her pastimes included cooking, baking, gardening, sewing, homemaking which included decorating. A sassy but proud woman, she was known for her stern but comical nature. She enjoyed her grandchildren and was awaiting the arrival of her newest great-grandchild. She also loved to write poetry.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jessie Hartgrove; grandson, Rodney Wood; siblings, Lovenia McGill, Jamie Wood, Etta Smith, Rosa Smith, Earnestine Epps, J.D. Wood and Blondell Robinson and a step-son, William Hargrove (Lula).

Left to cherish her precious memory are her children, Kathy Wood, Billy Hartgrove (Georgiana) and Timothy Hartgrove (Pamela) all of Shelby; step-children, Ella Sue Brewton and Lois Hammond both of NJ; a sister, Alice McCluney of Shelby; a brother, Howard Wood (Joyce) of Asheville, NC; special niece and nephew-in-law, Gloria McClain (David) of Kings Mountain, NC; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and a host of additional nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 1, 2022 at 3:00 PM at Shoal Creek Baptist Church. Burial will take place at Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM at the church and at other times at 2504 Elizabeth Ave. The service will be livestreamed starting at 2:45 PM from the Enloe Mortuary Face Book page.
