Obituary For Robert "Dee Kates" L. Kates

Robert L. Kates, “Dee Kates”, 82, of Harrisburg, transitioned into eternal life on Monday, April 25, 2022 peacefully at home. He was born in Halifax County, VA to the late James and Harriet (Barksdale) Kates. “Dee Kates”, as he was affectionately called, was one of ten children. He received his formal education in the public school system of Virginia. As a child, he worked as a laborer with his family farming different types of agriculture. Dee took pride in sharing the stories of his youth and how he was able to help his family ‘pulling tobacco’. His stories always brought a smile to whoever was listening. He also worked at Dan River Cotton Mill in Danville, Virginia prior to moving north. During his time in Chatham, Virginia, Dee was married to the late Myrtle (Shirley) Graves Kates. Their marriage was blessed with the birth of his only child, Loria Ann Kates. After moving to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 1974, Dee was an employee of Fry Communications until his retirement in 2018. He was a hard worker and enjoyed working, especially working outside and gardening. He was known for his ‘green thumb’: Dee planted flowers and vegetables, taking care of yards and gardens for family and friends without them ever having to ask. He also enjoyed extra income as a handyman. He was also known for singing during special occasions. He sang his favorite song: “Jordan River I’m Bound to Cross” during many family events. Dee shared a love of classic cars. He and his nephews would talk for hours about the classics. The 1961 black Ford Starliner was his prettiest car ever. Dee’s love for his 1994 Ford Ranger kept him anticipating home, during his last stay in the hospital. He couldn’t wait to get home to drive it. He was a ‘favorite’ uncle to all of his nieces and nephews. Everyone looked forward to his quiet wit and support. If you needed him, he was right there. Dee looked forward to family visits: going south every year for his birthday became a tradition. Dee’s life will be celebrated on Monday, May 2 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Major H. Winfield Funeral Home, Steelton with viewing 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. and further services and burial in Danville, VA. Live Streaming of the service will be available on Major H. Winfield Funeral Home’s YouTube page. COVID-19 Guidelines will be observed with face masks for all attendees. www.majorhwinfieldfuneralhome.com
