Obituary For Sallie Mae Powell

Mrs. Sallie Mae Powell, 80, of Columbus, GA passed Friday, May 13, 2022 in Columbus, GA.

Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. EST, Saturday, May 21, 2022 in the C.T. Chapel of Taylor Funeral Home. Interment will follow in New Fellowship Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Buena Vista, GA. Visitation will be Friday, May 20, 2022 from 12-5 p.m. EST.

Sallie Mae Powell was born on May 11, 1942 in Buena Vista, GA to the parents of Ozzie Murray and Clara Minter Murray. Sallie attended elementary school in the Marion County School System and continued her education in New York where she graduated from high school.

Sallie gave her life to Christ at an early age. She was a member and an usher at the McClurie Town Church of God and Christ in Troy, Alabama until she moved back to Georgia.

Sallie joined James Powell in Holy Matrimony in the late 1980’s. Even though Sally never had biological children of her own, she has helped to raise many that she called her own. Including Frances Murray (her cousin), Sandra Murray Clarke (cousin) and her husband grandchildren, Lil James, Michael, Zavier, Cabbage Patch and others.

Sallie lived in Agawam, Massachusetts after graduating and worked at Spalding Golf Company for many years. She later moved to Miami, FL and Dothan, AL before returning home to Georgia. She resided in Buena Vista and Columbus until her health began to fail when her sister Betty McKnight began to care for her.

Preceding her in death is her husband, James Powell; two sisters, Newt Tymes and Ruby West; three brothers, Jean Minter, Oscar Murray and Warnie Murray, Sr.

Sallie leaves to cherish her memories her sisters, Betty McKnight of Columbus, GA, Betty Rawls of Miami, FL, Tony Murray of California and Jonie Murray of California; one brother, Thomas Murray (Pearl) of Buena Vista, GA.; very devoted niece, Tammy McKnight of Columbus, GA and a host of nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.
