Born July 25, 1950, Mrs. Hazel D. Thompson entered life in Hampton, SC as the fourth child to the late Alexander and Lucille Gilyard Dobson. Growing up Mrs. Thompson was known as a quiet, friendly, and outgoing young woman that participated as a high school cheerleader for North District Training School. A talented seamstress, by hobby, Mrs. Thompson was known to sew for those in the community. Always willing to be of service, Mrs. Thompson was known at an early age to help anyone in need, love unconditionally, forgive quickly, and visit the sick. She loved gardening and sharing what she grew. Mrs. Thompson grew up as a member of New Hope Baptist Church and after marriage later became a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Early Branch, SC.
On April 22, 1972 Mrs. Thompson married her high school sweetheart, Arneal Thompson. From this union were born their son Kevin Lamont Thompson and daughter LaToya DiAndria Thompson. In addition, this union lovingly welcomed a step-daughter, Kelly Brown-Jones.
Mrs. Thompson accepted Christ in 1995 and soon moved her church membership to Family Worship Center of Yemassee, SC. While attending Family Worship Center Mrs. Thompson was commissioned as a Missionary, Sunday School teacher, founder of the Women of Salt program and a member of Grandma Rachel’s summer youth camp. In addition to being an active member of the church, Missionary Thompson continued to work as a braiser for Scotman Ice Systems in Fairfax, SC for fifteen years. Upon leaving the workforce, Missionary Thompson became a dedicated homemaker.
After several years of faithfully serving the congregation of Family Worship Center, Missionary and Deacon Thompson were charged with assisting Pastor and First Lady Colin Barrett in establishing Beulah United Apostolic Church in Williston, SC where he also became an ordained minister.
Though sickness robbed Missionary Thompson of her health and strength, through her weakness she watched her husband of 50 years become an ordained Elder. Shortly after, weakness overtook Missionary Thompson. On May 21, 2022, Missionary Thompson entered into peaceful rest surrounded by her family.
Missionary Thompson has been preceded in death by her parents Alexander and Lucille Gilyard Dobson as well as sisters Helen Grant, Mary Dobson, Martha Dobson and Denise Dobson. Surviving are her husband of 50 years Arneal Thompson, son Kevin Thompson (Kristine) of Nashville, TN, daughter LaToya Thompson of Columbia, SC, step-daughter Kelly Brown-Jones (Abdullah Muhammad) of Newark, NJ, sisters Libby Dobson of Aiken, SC, Elaine Edwards-Faison (James) of Hampton, SC, Patricia Williams (Leon) of Varnville, SC, brothers Luther Chaplin (Angie) of Columbia, SC, and Alexander Dobson of Hampton, SC, grandchildren Sarah Dobson of Knob Knoster, MO, Myron Dobson, Jr of Columbia, SC, Nathan Thompson (Lorilea) of Tampa, FL, Alexandria Sievers (Gary) of Tampa, FL, Joshua Thompson of Orlando, FL, sisters-in-law Martha Barnwell (Joseph) of Sequin, TX, Debra Wiggins (Ricky) of Early Branch, SC, Wanonia Heyward of Early Branch, SC, a host of great-grandchildren and friends. We will forever love and miss you!
Visitation: Wednesday, May 25th, 6-7 pm in the Chapel of Young Funeral Home.
Funeral Service: Thursday, May 26th, 10:00 am, Jerusalem Cemetery, Porter Road, (Cummings), Early Branch, SC.
All services will be conducted under the CDC guidelines for COVID-19, FACIAL COVERINGS AND SOCIAL DISTANCING.
