Obituary For Eleanor "Cubby" Johnson

On May 20, 1953 in St. Francisville, Louisiana, James Henry Gilmore, Sr. and Lillie Mae Blue Gilmore were blessed with a beautiful baby girl whom they named Eleanor Stewart. Known to all who knew and Loved her as Cubby.

Eleanor “Cubby” received her education in the St. Lucie County Public Schools and graduated with the Class of 1971 from Fort Pierce Central High School. Go Cobras!! She attended Indian River Community College, currently Indian River State College. She enjoyed family and the few friends that she cherished. Eleanor “Cubby” married Melvin Freeman, who proceeded her in death in 1979. She later married Ernest Johnson who proceeded her in death in 2013. Eleanor frequently attended St. Beaulah’s Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Willie Bea. Eleanor worked for Florida Department of Corrections for over 20 years and retired in 2013. She was a storyteller as she shared many exciting and funny experiences while at Martin Corrections and old family memories.

On June 9, 2022, while with her beloved BoBo on the way to the Hair Salon, she slipped away peacefully into the arms of God. She’s now with her Loved ones, including her parents, three brothers, and four sisters. I truly believe that the sisters Ann, Sandra, Cathy, Shirley and Cubby are having a good time in Heaven.
