She was born in Durham, North Carolina, the oldest of three girls born to the union of the late William Dexter Southerland and the late Rosetta Marion Womack Southerland.
Doris grew up in Durham and received her formal education in North Carolina, where she graduated from Hillside High School in 1953. Having a desire to further her education, Doris attended Winston Salem State University from where she received her Bachelors’ Degree in 1958 and still thirsty for knowledge she went on to North Carolina Central University from where she received her Masters of Education Degree in Mental Retardation in 1962.
During her working career, her employment in teaching expanded in public and private intitutions from North Carolina to Erie and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania until her retirement in 1996.
Doris received Jesus as her Personal Savior at an early age and united with the membership of a church wherever she lived to include Emanuel Church of God in Christ in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; Praise Tabernacle in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and Antioch A. M. E. Church in Stone Mountain, Georgia.
She had a passion for Music and her hobbies were playing the piano, singing and directing choirs. She also enjoyed writing poetry, dramatic writings and cooking. Doris was a member of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and many other church and civic organizations.
Doris was married to William “Billy” Kiser whom she later divorced and their union was blessed with the birth of two sons, Anthony André Kiser and Dereck Lamont Kiser.
In addition to her parents, her son, Anthony André Kiser and her grandson, Anthony André Kiser II ”Little Tone”, whom she had a special relationship with, preceded her in death.
Doris leaves to celebrate her life and to cherish precious memories, her son, Dereck Lamont Kiser of Stone Mountain, Georgia; her devoted sisters, Wilma D. Taylor of Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Eva R. Sutton of Summerfield, Florida; her two grandchildren; her five great grandchildren; her daughter-in-law, Sandra Kiser of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; her nephew, Brian Taylor of Rochester, New York; her goddaughter, Annette Simmons (Romeo) of Stone Mountain, Georgia and a host of other relatives and family friends.
Doris’ life will be celebrated on Thursday, June 30 at 11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary of Emanuel Church of God in Christ at 601 North 16th Street, Harrisburg, PA with viewing 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. and entombment in William Howard Day Cemetery.
