MS. JANET LOUISE BASKERVILLE HAYES, born August 15, 1956 in Philadelphia, PA and she was the eldest child of Mertis “Ann” Johnson Baskerville and the late Richard Henry Baskerville. She never hesitated to remind her four younger brothers of her status. In fact, she would go toe-to-toe with them on any issue. Janet departed this life suddenly on July 22, 2022 in VCU-Community Memorial Hospital, South Hill, VA. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Richard “Junnie” Baskerville.

Janet was a 1974 graduate of Park View High School and went on to earn an Associate Degree in Healthcare Technology, Richmond, VA, where she worked for a number of years before returning to South Hill, VA. She also earned a Nursing Degree and was a dedicated supervisor at Pine View Assisted Living Facility in South Hill.

She was a faithful member of Jerusalem United Church of Christ where she served as the clerk and she also sang in the Gospel Choir.

Janet took pride in watching her children and grandchildren grow up and accomplish their dreams. She was dedicated to taking care of her mother and decided to move in with her when her mother could no longer live independently. She served as the personal stylist for her mother and would often edit her outfits, especially before attending church. Janet had a special bond with her Aunt Frances, whom she loved very much. She adored babies and would go out of her way to hold them. Her face would light up whenever they were in her arms.

Janet took joy in family gatherings whether near or far. She was a member of the Positive Sistas Club. She enjoyed cooking dishes such as pasta salad, which was in high demand. She loved to dance and would Cupid Shuffle with the best of them. She maintained long-term friendships with her classmates dating back to elementary school. She was an avid reader and writer and she enjoyed watching African American dramas and comedies. She loved to eat peaches and her favorite color was orange.

Janet leaves to cherish 4 children- Alphonso (Jennifer) Pamplin; C. Wayne (Diana) Hayes, E. Mark (Ashley) Hayes, all of South Hill, VA and Erica J. Hayes, Glen Allen, VA; 14 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren; mother- Mertis “Ann,” Baskerville, South Hill, VA; 4 brothers- Dr. Carl L. Baskerville, Silver Springs, MD; Gerald Baskerville (Frances Hayes), LaCrosse, VA; Gordon (Renae) Johnson, Brodnax, VA and J. Riddick “Ricky” (Sandra) Baskerville, South Hill, VA; 4 aunts- Avon Baskerville, Philadelphia, PA; Eleanor (Rev. Willie) Tisdale and Frances B. Jones, all of South Hill, VA and Mildred (Nathaniel) Bing, Washington, DC; 1 uncle- Junius “Joe” (Elaine) Johnson, Boydton, VA; 2 Godchildren- Shemeka Taylor and Jai’Ceon Manning; sisters-in-love, Etta White and Gloria Baskerville; devoted friends-Vanessa Dotson, Debra Holmes-Palmer, Celestine Walker, Norma Jean Jiggetts and Donnie Johnson, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
