Obituary For James "Jimmy" Cornelius Smith

James “Jimmy” Smith, 76, of Bassett, V.A. passed 7/25/2022. Public viewing will be held Friday, July 29, 2022, from 1:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at Perry-Spencer Funeral Home, Eden, NC. The family will receive friends at Monument of Faith Church Eden, NC, Saturday, July 30, 2022, from 1:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. with funeral service beginning at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow in the Smith Family Cemetery Ridgeway, VA. THE FAMILY ASK THAT YOU PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING AND WEAR YOUR MASK.

On Monday, July 25, 2022 about 5:58 pm, the Death Angel was dispatched from Glory to bring in from his earthly cares and toils, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, cousin, friend, Deacon James (Jimmy) Cornelius Smith. After a beautiful life of service, he went home to live with the Lord.

He was born in Ridgeway, VA to the late Myrtle Williams Smith and Harvey Willie Smith. To this union was born twelve children, six boys and six girls. In addition to his parent,he was preceded in death by two sisters, Marilyn Dalton and Shirley Ziglar; four brothers, Oscar Smith, Richard Smith, Lawrence Smith and Harvey Smith.

Jimmy attended George Washington Carver High School in Fieldale, VA. He also retired from Bassett Furniture Factory as a Pump House Supervisor. In his spare time, he would make all kinds of furniture for different friends. Jimmy was gifted with his hands. He loved to work with wood. His wood ability can be found throughout North Carolina, Virginia, many churches and homes.

He was married to Sylvia Elaine Smith. They were the parents of Tamika Smith, Steve Burgess, James Martin and Patricia Neal.

He was a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather, not only to his own children, but also to the children in the church and community.

In 1986, Jimmy heard the Gospel in its fullness and he was saved, sanctified and filled with the Holy Ghost, under the leadership of the late Pastor Lettie Cohen and the late Pastor Bobby Robertson. Jimmy was a Deacon in his own rights. He served his post diligently at McLaughlin Memorial United Holy Church, South Boston, VA, Mt Zion United Holy Church, Martinsville, VA and presently at Monument of Faith, Eden, NC. He was an adjutant par-excellent. Jimmy loved to serve his leaders.

Deacon Jimmy Smith was a true servant of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He loved the Lord and was one of God’s choice praises. Brothers and sisters, the devil was defeated, destiny was fulfilled and divine purpose won. His life and works have added another page in the ledger of Pentecostal Holiness.

Those left to cherish his memory include: his wife, Sylvia Elaine Smith; two daughters, Tamika Smith and Patricia Neal; two sons, Stevie Burgess and James Martin (Sylvia); one brother, John Smith (Bonita); four sisters, Geneva Jones,Thelma Wright (Vonronstead), Diane Smith, Pauline Wimbush (Alonzo); seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friend.
