Mother Mattie Sue Moore Stephens, was born on January 31, 1934 to the late Mattie Lou Sanford Moore and the late John Lee Moore. Mattie departed this life on September 12, 2022 at the home of her niece Pamela (Nelson) Bennett. Mattie was affectionately known to her family and friends as “Gul”, “Girl”, “Ma” and “Big Ma”.
In addition to her parents, four siblings preceded her in death: Delfort Jackson, John L. Moore, Margaret Scott and Evelyn Jones.
Mattie was united in Holy matrimony to the late Fred L. Stephens. Over the years Mattie and Fred loved taking care of children and giving them special nicknames: Aston Evans (Boo Boo), Brittany Alexander (Angel), Richard Brinkley, Jr. (Romeo), Brockton Evans (Buddy) and many, many more.
Mattie joined the Boswell Chapel Baptist Church at an early age. She served faithfully as President of the Usher’s Board, sang in the Sr. Choir and served on the Mother’s Board.
Mattie leaves to cherish her memories two sisters: Annie (Joe) Baker of Sparta, Ga., Maggie M. Brown of Greensboro, Ga.; two brothers: Grady Bess and James Bess both of Greensboro, Ga. Two favorite cousins: Jimmy Stovall and Lucy Nesbitt. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Special friends: Betty Drake and Carol Lawrence.
