Obituary For Hazel Clayton Hayes

Hazel Clayton Hayes of Tallahassee, Florida was born October 8, 1930, in Quincy, Florida to the late Carrie Buggs McCrae and Will Clayton. She transitioned from life to eternity September 17, 2022. She was preceded in death by her parents Carrie Buggs McCray and Will Clayton, sister, Ruth Mae Brown, brother Robert Conrad, nephews: Jerome Drake Brown and Charles Edward Brown, niece, Carrie Mae Brown and cousin, Cora Allen.

Hazel received Christ as her personal Lord and Savior at an early age. Her favorite scripture is Psalm 23. She was a faithful member of Bethel A.M.E. Church in Tallahassee Florida where she served faithfully in many auxiliaries including the Stewardess Board. Her passion was the Lay Organization where she devoted most of her time.

Hazel graduated from Carter Paramore Academy in Quincy, Florida. She received an Associate of Arts degree from Edward Waters College, Bachelors of Science degree from Florida A&M University in Elementary Education and a Master’s degree in Reading from Michigan State University. She was an Elementary School Reading Specialist. She acquired over 40 years in teaching in Indian River County and Detroit Public School systems.

Hazel was very civic minded and gave willing voluntary service to the following: Neighborhood Sick Watch, District Lay Organization of A.M.E. Church, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Phi Delta Kappa and other organizations. Some of the many certificates and awards received: McCall Elementary School “World’s Best Teacher”, Zeta Phi Beta Volunteer of the Year, Congress of U. S. House of Representatives for Educational Leadership and Top Ladies of Distinction Award. She received from her beloved Bethel A.M.E. Church an Award for outstanding support and appreciation.

Left to cherish her precious memories are: daughter and son-in-law, Vicki Hayes(Eric) Seymour; son, Clyde Douglas Hayes, Jr.; great nephews, Antonio Brown, Jerome Lamar Brown; great nieces, Kenya Smith, Antoinette Smith and Goddaughter, Carol Cobb; cousin, Bertha McCray; The Hayes Family and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and loving relatives and friends. Special Friends: Marion Wooley and Bessie King, Callie Morgan (predeceased) and her golden brown, devoted dog Roy.

Funeral services for Hazel Clayton Hayes will convene on Saturday, September 24, 2022 at Mount Zion AME Church in Vero Beach, FL beginning at 12:00pm. Burial will immediately follow in Gifford Cemetery.

Although many venues have opened and the restrictions of COVID-19 have been relaxed, we at Stone Brothers Funeral Homes are still enforcing the guidelines set forth by the CDC and FDOH to protect our families and our staff. We ask that you respect this, as it could very well save your life. We also ask that you acknowledge and execute the 6 feet social distancing guidelines as well.
