Warren "Chuckie" Ray, Jr.

Passed 11/20/2022

Obituary For Warren "Chuckie" Ray, Jr.

Warren W. Ray (affectionately known as Chuckie), 66, of Harrisburg, peacefully transitioned into eternal life on Sunday, November 20, 2022, at Carolyn’s House (hospice) in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania son of Elder Elista Waters, the late Warren (Chick) Ray and late stepfather, Leslie Waters. He was educated in the Harrisburg School District and was a rifleman in the United States Marine Corps. He was a member of McLamb Memorial Church of the Living God.

He was known as one of the “best barbers in the city”. He owned barbershops and was a master barber who taught many barbers how to cut hair and open barber salons. Chuckie loved dressing to impress and taking pictures. Chuckie lived in California for a short period of time. While in California, he ran a barbershop of a Christian woman just because she loved the way he cut hair. He later resided in Atlanta, Georgia for four years where he worked in Hasan’s Atlanta’s Finest Barber Shop cutting professional basketball player’s hair. Chuckie also lived for a short time in Norfolk, Virginia where he cut hair at the Norfolk Virginia Mall. Everywhere He worked he would talk the entire time he was cutting your hair and have you laughing the entire time too.

Chuckie, in his younger years, would hang tight with his cousin, Darnell Blackstone (Butchie) who was like his brother. Chuckie got in trouble with his cousin and partied with his cousin. In his later years, he liked to spend time with his nephew, AJ Perez who he wanted to go live with while his nephew was in college just so he could have fun while being taken care of. After Chuckie’s sister, Val and nephew, AJ stopped caring for him, Chuckie’s oldest son, Warren took care of him until he entered the hospital. Chuckie’s friend, Kara Grigsby kept Chuckie company and also helped others to take care of him at times. His oldest daughter, Betty helped him transition from this life peacefully by rubbing his body, cleaning his face for him and talking to him. His sister, Kathy helped lead him to accept Christ as his Savior on Sunday, November 6, 2022.

In addition to his father and stepfather, he was preceded in death by his son, Tariq W. Ray, Sr. and he leaves to celebrate his life, his wife, Tracy (Rooks) Ray; his mother, Elder Elista Waters; his children, Warren Anderson, Betty Porter, Fareed Ray, Dorothy Ray and Dequandra Taylor; his siblings, Reverend Valerie Elam, Reverend Kathryn Waters, Esq., Kim Ray, Thomas Dennis, Anthony Dennis, Greg Ray, Esq., Beauregard Valdes Ray, Darian Davis-Ray, Karen Waters and other stepsisters; his stepdaughters, Amber Rooks, Autumn Rooks and Nicole Rooks; his aunts, Carol Bair and Kathlyn Herring; his uncles, Ernest Fisher and Gary Fisher; his 24 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Warren’s life will be celebrated on Saturday, December 3, 2022 at 11 a.m. in the Sanctuary of McLamb Memorial Church of the Living God, 5 N. 25th Street, Harrisburg, PA 17103 with viewing 10 until 11 a.m. and burial in East Harrisburg Cemetery. A repast will be held immediately following the burial at McLamb Memorial Church of the Living God.

COVID-19 Guidelines will be observed and mandated with face masks.

Cousin Chuckie, you will surely be missed. I will always remember the wonderful times we spent uptown hanging out with family. You along with Butchie and Jimmy were my favorite male cousins. You were a believer and there is no doubt that you are resting in the arms of the Lord. I love you, Chuckie Ray! Faye

To the family, I am sending my heartfelt condolence for the loss of a good man. LUCKY CHUCKIE, was always a joy to be around. He always had a kind word to speak and a joke to tell, just to put a smile on your face. He ran a barber shop from the skills and finest from the old school barbers that he inherit, such as Mr. Hudson, Mr. Cheatham, Mr. Scott, Mr. Talley and Mr. Folks, some of 6th Streets finest, just to name a few. Up doing early morning appointments and always there for late evening appointments. Lucky was a master of his craft, it gave him joy and pride to teach a lot of the young men that came after him. He was a strong believer of the saying "each one, teach one". He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He left a great legacy behind. May his sole rest in paradise. I have a lot of fond memories, when I think of him and his persona it brings a smile to my face. Praying for the family in the moment of grief. Cherish all the precious memories and I'm sure you will smile also. Linda Jackson and Family

The Broken Chain We little knew that day, God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, In death, we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you. You did not go alone. For part of us went with you, The day God called you home. You left us beautiful memories, Your love is still our guide. And although we cannot see you, You are always at our side. Our family chain is broken, And nothing seems the same, But as God calls us one by one, The chain will link again. Author: Ron Tranmer You will be truly missed but never forgotten my cousin/ brother ❤️ Anita Blackston
