Obituary For Johnnie Mae Sparks Pegues

( January 20, 1923 -- December 25, 2022 )

TYLER--- Funeral services for Ms. Johnnie Mae Sparks Pegues will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at Miles Chapel C.M.E. Church. The services will begin at 12 noon. Rev. Orenthia Mason, Presiding Elder of the North Tyler District will be the eulogist. Immediately following will be the interment at the Post Oak Union Cemetery in Easton, Texas.

Johnnie Mae Sparks Pegues was born January 20, 1923 to the late Richard Sparks and Mattie Edith Ayers Sparks in Center, Texas. She attended and graduated from Tatum High School. She earned a Bachelor's Degree in Home Economics from Texas College in Tyler, Texas. She worked diligently helping students with "special needs" in the Tyler Independent School District.

In 1944, Johnnie was united in holy matrimony to Marion Pegues Jr and to this union four children were born: Tozz, Thadis, Willie Mae & Marion

Johnnie was a member of Miles Chapel C.M.E. Church where she served on the Stewardess Board #3. She actively served with pride and joy while helping others. Ms. Pegues spent lots of time crocheting beautiful dollies, tissue covers and trash can covers that helped to lift the spirit of others.

She was a widow at a young age and she promised her husband that she would keep their family together. She worked hard to provide for her family and encouraged all of them to pursue higher education. She was also active in the voting rights movement and made sure that local citizens had the opportunity to vote.

Mrs. Pegues was preceded in death by her mother, father, husband: Marion Pegues Jr; one daughter: Willie Mae Scott, and one son: Thadis Carver Pegues. She leaves to cherish her loving memories, one son: Tozz (Ruthie) Pegues, Aurora, Colorado; one daughter: Marion Etta Wilson, Richardson, Texas; one step daughter: Claradine (Emmett Sr) Mapps: Longview, Texas; one daughter-in-law: Olivia Pegues, Houston, Texas; eleven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, seven great great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

Public viewing will be on Friday, January 6, 2023 from 2 p.m. to 8 p,m. at the funeral home.
