Obituary For Dorothy Jean Groce

Funeral service for Ms. Dorothy Jean Groce, 73, of Talladega will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2023, at Terry's Mortuary Chapel. Reverend E. L. Jacobs will deliver the eulogy. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2023.

The late J. T. Groce and the late Marie Elston Groce were blessed with two baby girls, Dorothy Jean and Dorothy Marie, on March 15, 1949, in Talladega, Alabama.

At an early age, Dorothy Jean committed her life to Christ and united with Greater Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church. Upon her return to Talladega from her life in California, Dorothy Jean united with Union Springs Missionary Baptist Church where she served faithfully with the missionary group and was a regular attendee of Sunday school. Anyone who knew her knew that she loved her pastor and church. She was a member of the 1967 graduating class of Westside High School and continued her education at Alabama State University. Jean left Alabama State and decided she was ready for a new beginning and chose Los Angeles, California to be her home; more specifically, the Inglewood community. She dedicated over 40 years of service to Pacific Bell until her retirement in 2001. Upon retiring, Jean decided to make Talladega her forever home.

Dorothy Jean found joy in many activities outside of her professional life. She loved flowers. Sports was at the top of the list for her viewing pleasure which included golf, tennis and cheering on the Raiders. Jean would frequently travel to Las Vegas when she lived on the west coast to see shows and work on possibly expanding her wallet. Additionally, she enjoyed taking cruises and partaking in fine cuisine at a couple of her restaurants, Red Lobster and Longhorn.

Although Dorothy Jean was not blessed with children of her own, she was blessed with a number of nieces and nephews that will cherish her memory: Eric B. Lewis, Derrick A. Lewis, Monicia N. Lewis, Tina N. Lewis, Judy Groce, Terry Groce, Meshell Groce, Latecia Groce, Robyn Lewis, Arthur Phillips, Willie Joe Lewis, Montrell George, Demeatris Groce, George Traylor and Tercarlois Traylor; and a special sister and friend, Diane Barclay. On January 13, 2023, Dorothy Jean was reunited in eternity with her parents, J. T. and Marie Groce; her twin sister, Dorothy Marie Lewis; and three other siblings, Tim Groce, Peggy Moore and J. T. Groce, Jr.
