He was a graduate of Coosa High School and served in the United States Army. He was employed by Norfolk Southern Railway until his retirement in 2000.
He was proceeded in death by his mother, Ruthie Clyde Lawler in 1987; his father, R.C. Lawler in 1997; his son, Joe Highfield in 2021, and his wife, Vickie Lawler in 2022.
He leaves behind two sisters and two brothers, Gail Neal, Sheila (Buddy) Stephens, Lafayne Lawler, and Dwight (Shelia) Lawler; three daughters, Denise Lawler, Terri Lawler, and Katrina Johnson; one son, James Haney, and a step son Eddie Payne; 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren.

A Memorial Celebration for Mr. Hoyte Lawler will be held Friday, January 20, 2023 at 3 pm in the Chapel of F. K. Jones Funeral Home.
