Obituary For Harvey Stern, Sr.

Harvey Eugene Stern, Sr. "June" was born in Harrisburg, PA to the union of the late Harvey Lee Stern and the late Mildred Lee (Crawford) Stern.

He received his formal education in the Harrisburg School District and attended the former William Penn High School, where he participated in boxing and was a Boy Scouts leader. He enlisted in the United States Army and served his country faithfully from 1971 to 1974, he received his GED, was honorably discharged and received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

In his early years, between the ages of 9 to 12, Harvey worked for the Harrisburg Hospital in the laundry department and later was employed with Santanna Banana Company before leaving for the army. He enjoyed riding his bike to the Bethlehem Steel Mill where he was employed for 45 years until he later retired in 2013.

In his leisure time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing to such a degree that he shared these hobbies with his children, nephews and grandchildren. Harvey believed strongly in teaching life learned lessons. He was all about family and family gatherings, which included his annual crab fests. Harvey was a very hard worker, genuine, loyal, loving, organized and very funny. He was a die-hard Steelers fan and enjoyed talking “smack” about other teams. He loved his beanie hats and overalls. Harvey had a great passion for using his exercise bike, home improvements, caring for his plants, fish, turtles, garden and his two dogs: his buddies-BAM-BAM and G-Man. You could find him dancing whenever and wherever giving him the name “Twinkle Toes”. He would dance while singing his heart out…even if he did not know the words. Last but not least, he was the picture man; every event, every wedding, every outing, he was the photographer. Boy, did he love taking pictures!

On Thursday, January 19, 2023, at his home, Harvey transitioned from his earthly life into eternal life and was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey Lee Stern and Mildred Lee Stern; his dog, G-Man and great grandson, Khayri Holloway, Jr. He leaves to celebrate precious memories of him, his dog, BAM-BAM; his children, Annette M. Stern “Huckie Dorie”, Harvey E. Stern, Jr. “Fats”, Lucretia Y. Thomas “Bubbles” Treassa Strawn “Prissy” (Shawn L. Strawn, Sr.) and Nyika A. Stern “Ny”, all of Harrisburg, PA; 13 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and one great grandchild on the way; his siblings, Jessie M. Stern, Mildred Y. Stern, Vera Stern-Littles, Edward L. Stern, Michael D. Stern, Sr. (Millicent Stern), Anthony R. Stern (Angela Stern) and Vicki R. Akra (Daniel Akra), all of Harrisburg, PA; his dear friends, Charles Ridgeway, Junie Walker, Larry Wade, Sr. and Bobby Jones and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, many friends and associates.

His life will be celebrated on Friday, January 27th at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of the Major H. Winfield Funeral Home, 704 North Front Street, Steelton, with viewing and visitation 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. and burial in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
