Obituary For Georgia Bell Ledford Smith

A celebration of life for Georgia Bell Ledford Smith, 90, formerly of Talladega will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at Refuge Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Ms. Smith will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service.

Georgia Bell Ledford Smith passed away on the 14th day of February, 2023, at her residence in Mableton, Georgia. Ms. Georgia was born on the 19th day of May, 1932, to Mr. Tom and Mrs. Alberta Orr Ledford in Talladega, Alabama.

Ms. Georgia attended Westside High School in Talladega, Alabama. After completing her public school education, she moved to Atlanta, Georgia, attended nursing school and worked as a nurse for many years.

While in Atlanta, Ms. Georgia met and married Guy Richard Smith in 1952. She and Mr. Smith later had four children, Richard, Rodney, Cynthia, and Randy. She also became the stepmother of Mr. Smith’s children, James and Betty.

Upon the passing of her husband, Ms. Georgia returned to Talladega and raised her family there.

She attended Refuge Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ in Talladega, Alabama where she was a mother of the church, a Sunday school teacher, sang in the choir, served as a faithful member and she was a hard church worker. She also attended the Cornerstone Community Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia.

Ms. Smith loved children and her community. She served in roles that allowed her to help others, such as being a kindergarten teacher and a substitute teacher, sitting with patients overnight in the hospital, serving as a bus driver for a senior citizens program and acting as a dormitory director at Talladega College.

Ms. Georgia was predeceased by Guy Richard Smith, her husband; James R. Smith, her stepson; and Renarda Cynthia Smith, her daughter.

She is survived by her children, Betty S. Bell and her husband David Fiskun, Richard C. Smith and his wife Sophia, Rodney C. Smith and his wife Stephanie, Gary Brown, Cynthia’s husband and Randell C. Smith and his wife Pamala. She leaves eleven grandchildren, five great grandchildren, a devoted nephew and niece Donald and Nell Silmon; a special brother, Samuel Ledford and wife Beverly and their son, Raynard of Chino, California.

Ms. Georgia wanted to leave you with this thought: Don’t cry or weep for me. I am at rest and peace with Jesus.
