Obituary For James Vickers

James Lee Vickers was the only child born to the late Pearly Mae (King) Vickers and the late Harrison Vickers in Macon, Georgia.

He was educated in the public school system of Macon, Georgia. Having a great desire to be of service to others and his country, he enlisted in the United States Navy. During his time in service, he was awarded many medals for recognition to include: The American Area Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the Philippine Liberation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

After his honorable discharge from the US Navy, he wanted to pursue new goals. He made Charleston, South Carolina his home and joined the International Longshoreman Association local 1422. Always one with an entrepreneurial spirit, he opened “Vick’s Drive Inn” in Charleston Heights--where he met the love of his life, Josephine. During the years that followed, he continued to faithfully serve ILA until his retirement in 2010. He married Josephine and raised a family. James was a joy to be around and to his friends, he was “The Host with the Most”. He had a great sense of humor and an infectious laugh. He loved people and would do anything for them.

During his 96 years with us he touched many lives. He was a friend, an uncle, a brother, a loving husband and father to all that had the pleasure of encountering him. For many years he was a member of Trinity AME Church, Canaan Missionary Baptist Church and currently Beulah Baptist Church. He was “Vicks” to many and some called him “Bubba”. He loved life, traveling with his wife and family, spending time with friends, listening to music, a great meal (including what was on your plate if you weren't quick enough). Additionally, in his later years, he tapped into his artistic side, finding joy in painting.

On Tuesday, February 14, 2023, James L. Vickers, at the age of 96 years, 2 months and 28 days, peacefully transitioned from this earthly life into eternal life with his loving wife by his side at the Butler Street Residential Hospice in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

James leaves to celebrate his life and cherish precious memories of him, his beloved wife, Josephine Keith Vickers; his children, H. Vincent Keith, Darrell L. Vickers, Donalynne J. Selvyn, Lynda K. Gethers (Ivory), Quentin L. Vickers (Marshika) and Latoya A. Vickers; his seven grandchildren; his 2 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
