Obituary For Lucille Braddy Lewis

Lucille Lewis, 85, was born on October 30, 1937. She was the first of four born to the late Cofield Robinson Braddy and late Clinton Braddy who were landowners and farmers in Jefferson County in the small town of Bartow, Georgia.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 11, 2023 at 12 Noon at Harts Grove Baptist Church. Interment will be held in the Braddy Family Cemetery, Bartow, GA

Her early years of education were received in a one room school. Mrs Lucille, along with her sisters, brothers, cousins and all her friends walked miles to school while white children rode the school bus to bigger and better schools. The white kids were given the new books while the black children were handed the old, dirty, battered and torn books. Mrs. Lucille’s high school education was received in Wadley, GA, where she was proudly driven to school by her father and friend’s father.

At an early age Mrs. Lucille joined Pleasant Hill Church under her grandmother Roxanne Seay Braddy’s and her father’s guidance. In April 1956, she moved to Brooklyn, New York. In 1960, Mrs. Lucille joined the Holy Trinity Missionary Baptist Church where she served and worked with the Welcome Club. She became a deaconess, served as church clerk and also worked in the church office.

In May of 1961, Mrs. Lucille met and married her future husband, Mr. Lawrence Lewis. They were married on June 16, 1963, at the Holy Trinity Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York. November 1979, Lawrence and Mrs. Lucille moved to Columbia, South Carolina. As of June 16, 2007, they had been married for forty-four years as of June 6, 2007.

Her occupations included Doll-Making as well as a calligrapher. She ran a home family day care and childcare provider service for six lovely babies and toddlers. During this time, Lawrence and Mrs. Lucille were the parents of four children, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren, whom will miss her dearly. She will also be missed by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
