Deloris was born in Washington D.C. in 1942 to Gladys and Jake Wolley. Deloris attended elementary and secondary schools in Washington, D.C.. She graduated from Cardozo High School in 1960. She obtained a degree in Business Administration in 1989 from the University of the District of Columbia. She married Clarence Wilder in 1965. From that union, Deloris and Clarence welcomed daughter, Lani Danette Wilder in March 1967.
Deloris authored two books: a children’s coloring book, God Created the World and Everything and a book for speaking engagements: That I Might Speak. Prior to her death, Deloris was writing a third book about Jesus and his ancestors.
Deloris was employed as a policy analyst for the Census Bureau. She worked in the federal government for 37 years. Deloris received recognition for being an outstanding employee on several occasions. After retiring from the Census Bureau in 1999, she moved to Fort Pierce, Florida to be near her siblings.
Deloris was truly an exceptional woman with a big heart, impacting the lives of all she encountered. Deloris was a woman of many passions including writing, teaching, traveling, giving, and crocheting. Deloris traveled to many countries with her best friend and sister, Mary Henson. Most recently she visited Australia and Dubai. Although she has traveled to many places, her favorite country to visit was Ghana.
Deloris was involved in many organizations. She was an Eastern Star, a superintendent of the Southern Baptist Union, a Sunday School teacher at Southern Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. and at First Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, and a volunteer with the St. Lucie County School Board. She was an avid philanthropist contributing to several charities, organizations, and individuals. Deloris lived a very lively and eventful life until she was called home to be with the Lord.
Deloris was a devoted mother, sister, aunt, Godmother, and friend. She will be dearly missed and her memory will be cherished by her siblings, Margaret, Mary, and Therman; her nieces, Demetress, Wendy, Tonya, and Angel; her nephews; Barry, Michael, Darry (and Godson), Joshua, and Dwayne; her Goddaughters Annette Stokes and Jamila Canty; her close friends Barbara Belton, Deloris Mixson, and Shirley Bonaparte; as well as numerous extended family members and friends.
Deloris was predeceased by her parents, Gladys and Jake Wolley; and her daughter, Lani D. Wilder.
Public visitation for Deloris W. Byers will take place on Friday, March 10, 2023 from 3:00pm-7:00pm at First Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Pierce, FL. Funeral Services will convene on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at First Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Pierce, FL beginning at 11:00am. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
