Nellie Ree Satcher

Funeral service for Deaconess Nellie Ree Satcher 92, will be Friday, April 28, at 1 pm at the Mount Liberty Baptist Church, where Pastor Arthur Cottingham, officiating, 851 Morrisville RD, Anniston. Interment will follow in New Liberty Cemetery. Mrs. Satcher passed away on April 19, 2023.

Mrs. Satcher's remains will arrive at the church one hour prior to her service. Deaconess Nellie Ree Satcher was born to Henry Bagley and Mancie Wilson Bagley on June 2, 1930, in Anniston, Alabama. She confessed Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior at an early age. She attended Thankful School in Anniston, Alabama. Where she then met and fell in love with Clarence Satcher Jr. In 1949, they were married and to this union seven children were born. Nellie was a homemaker while the children were young and eventually began working side by side with her husband Clarence at Blue Mountain Industries. During this time, she was a band booster at Walter Wellborn High School. Nellie was an active member at New Liberty Baptist Church where she oversaw most special programs involving the children. She faithfully supported charitable causes involving children in need. She worked at Blue Mountain for over 30 years until she retired. After retirement, Nellie enjoyed visiting family and friends both locally as well as out of town family, working in the garden, and sharing the harvest with family and friends. Her children affectionately called their parents brief visits "vegetable runs" Nellie always emphasized the importance of education to her children and grandchildren. During the 1960, she was active in the civil rights movement to desegregate local schools in Calhoun County. She wanted a quality and equal education for her family. Her eldest children Audrey, Albert and Clarence were a part of the first group of African Americans to attend Walter Wellborn HS in 1965. In her seventies, she and Clarence went back to school to continue learning as well. Their return to school as a "senior couple" was featured in the local newspaper "The Anniston Star".

She leaves to cherish her memory: six children: Audrey Nell Kenney of Weaver, AL, Clarence William Satcher (Brenda) of Columbus, GA, Marilyn Ashley of Anniston, AL, Melvin Satcher (Sandra) of Montgomery, AL, Dr. Douglas Satcher (Linda) of Riverdale, GA and Pamela Lowery of Douglasville, GA; 21 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren and 14 great, great grandchildren. She also leaves three siblings, Rosa Thorne, Alberta Johnson, and Lonzer Bagley, all of New Haven, CT and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Mr. and Mrs. Henry and Mancie Bagley. Her husband Clarence Satcher Jr. whom she was married to for over 58 years. Brothers, Frank Bagley, Walter Bagley, Lanton Bagley, Lenard Bagley, Henry Bagley Jr., Sam Bagley, Venson Bagley and Willie Wilson. Sister, Ruby Wright and her beloved eldest son Albert Lee Satcher.
