Obituary For Shirley Ann Garrett Lesure

A celebration of life honoring Mrs. Shirley Ann Garrett Lesure, 77, of Alpine will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Cropwell. Reverend Van T. Welch will deliver the eulogy. Interment will be in Kings Chapel Church Cemetery. Mrs. Lesure will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. Visitation will be held from 1-7 p.m. on Friday, May 12, 2023, at the funeral home.

Shirley Ann Garrett began life’s journey on April 11, 1946 to the union of Clarence Garrett and Pearl Sanders Garrett of Vincent, Alabama. Not only did she experience the love of her birth parents, but she was blessed to be loved and raised by Pastor Edward Curry Lee and Ever Nell (Garrett) Lee of Cleveland, Ohio.

Shirley came to love the Lord and gave her life to Christ at an early age under the leadership of Rev. and Sis. Lee at the Union Hill MBC of Cleveland, Ohio. There she developed her gift of singing and became known for her powerful, anointed, and Spirit-filled voice. She led the choir for many years and sang in quartet groups.

On October 22, 1960, Shirley married Sam Watters and to this union she was blessed with her five children. Sam preceded her in death in 1971, and she faithfully raised her children in the church on her own. She taught her children to sing in harmony, placed them in the choir, and then created a quartet group with them, the Union Hill Lee Specials.

On April 12, 1993, Shirley married Pastor David Lesure. They relocated to Alpine, Alabama in 1999 and they joined Kings Chapel Church, under the leadership of Pastor Van T. Welch. David preceded her in death in 2008.

Shirley was educated in the Cleveland School System. Education was important to her and she taught the value of education to her children. She is a former employee of Jack’s and was a smiling face that greeted shoppers at Piggly Wiggly in Childersburg.

Some of Shirley’s favorite pastimes included, but were not limited to, singing, bingo, cooking, iPad games, card games, reading, and occasionally starring in her own “home-based” comedy show of one.

On the evening of May 6, 2023, Shirley’s earthly journey quietly came to a close in Alpine, Alabama. She was preceded on her eternal journey by her husbands, her parents, Rev. Clarence and Pearl Garrett and Rev. Edward and Ever Nell Lee; two sisters, Ruth Mann and Linda Posey; one brother-in-law, Woody Robinson; and one son-in-law, Charles Willis.

Shirley Lesure’s legacy will live on through her five children, Shirle (Pastor Larry) Perkins of Ohio; Sharon (Carl) Pittman of Alpine, Alabama; Sam Watters of Cleveland, Ohio; Stephanie Willis of Alpine, Alabama; Sheila (Mack) Warren of Garfield Heights, Ohio; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Nellie Robinson of Detroit, MI; Joyce (Ben) Seals of Chicago, IL; and Tulisa Rousey of Killeen, TX; two brothers, Robert James (Mary) Garrett of Chicago, IL and Eddie Roy (Geneva) Maple of Alpine, Alabama; one brother-in-law, Robert Posey of Alpine, Alabama; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

So many great memories from childhood like the many church programs and watching her wreck the church singing "I'm Just Holding On! One of my favorites was eating her cheesecake. Hers always tasted like cake. I've spent all my adult life trying to find some as good as hers to no avail. To this day I only eat the crust of regular cheese cake because the rest doesn't hold a candle to hers! R.I.P. Shirley-Roe❤️‍🩹
