Agnes Wilder Nicholson departed this life May 13, 2023. The daughter of the late Robert Judson Wilder, Sr. and Beulah Richards Wilder, Agnes was born on May 4, 1925, in Richmond, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings Naomi W. Woodson, Doris W. Brown, Robert J. Wilder, Jr, Olga W. Graves, Berthel W. Penrose, and Jean W. Miller, and husband, Charles R. Nicholson, Sr. whom she married in 1951.
She is survived by her two children, son, Charles R. Nicholson Jr. (Nancy) of Richmond, daughter, Tracy L. Nicholson of Richmond, a grandson, Charles R. Nicholson III; and a brother, Lawrence Douglas Wilder Sr. In addition, she is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A lifelong member of First African Baptist Church, Agnes was baptized in 1937 under Pastor W. T. Johnson at age 12. Agnes graduated from Armstrong High School in 1941.
Agnes began her early career with Richmond Public Schools as an administrative secretary. As she advanced, she sought positions at two schools within her neighborhood in the West End, first at Randolph Middle School and her final position at Maymont Elementary School. After a fruitful and rewarding career, she retired in October 1988. Not one to sit at home, she became an active member of the Armstrong High School Reunion Class of 1941, Richmond Association of Retired Administrative Professionals, First African Baptist Church Historical Commission, Maymont Neighborhood Civic League, Richmond/Central Virginia Chapter of West Virginia State University National Alumni Association, Inc., the Merry Moderns pinochle club and the We Twelve pinochle club, the Mother’s Club, and the Richmond Chapter of the National Epicureans, Inc.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 23 from 6 to 7 pm at Scotts Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Boulevard, Richmond, Virginia. A celebration of her life service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, May 24 at First African Baptist Church, 2700 Hanes Avenue, Richmond, Virginia. Interment Oakwood Cemetery.
