On Monday, May 29, 2023 at 208 Depot Street in Manning, South Carolina, God gentley took Shemika Shantay “Monk” James under His wings to take a flight to His heavenly home.

Shemika Shantay “Monk” James, daughter of Debbie James Gibson and Lucious Sweat and stepdaughter of Micheal Gibson was born November 21, 1978 in Manning, South Carolina.

She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a 1997 graduate of Manning High School, in which she furthered her education at Central Carolina.

Being reared in a Christian home, she accepted Christ at an early age and became a devoted member of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend George P. Windley, Sr. in Manning, South Carolina. While there, she attended Sunday School, member of the Youth Choir and where ever she was needed.

She was employed at Manning IGA, BCA, Caterpillar and several other jobs during her lifetime.

Her hobbies were grilling, fishing, entertaining her friends, spending time with family.

Shemika was a passionate child of God, a mother, a daughter, a sister, aunt, niece and friend. She played a major role in mending the hearts of others, just by being herself.

Shemika leaves to cherish her precious memories, a son, Amard Graham, Manning, SC; mother, Debbie J. Gibson, Manning, SC; father, Lucious Sweat, Erie, PA; a sister, Sherelle (Frederick) James, Manning, SC; grandmother, Thelma Hilton James, Manning, SC; as a mother, Margie Smiling, Manning, SC; two uncles, Joseph (Brenda) James and Ronald Sweat both of Manning, SC; four aunts, Margie (Wayne) Jones, Winston Salem, NC, Lisa Hilton and Gloria Sweat both of Manning, SC and Willene Sweat, Summerton, SC; as a sister, Keosha (David) Cooper, Sumter, SC; as a brother, Rashard (Latisha) Wilson, Sumter, SC; two extended aunts, Georgette Rivers, Columbia,SC and Patricia Pringle, Elgin, SC; two extended uncles, Gregory Pringle, Irmo, SC and Richard Pringle, Winnsboro, SC; a niece, Kamaria Wilson, Manning, SC; a nephew, Zyion James, Manning, SC; extended children she took as her own, Sheldon, Karmaine, Shanequa, Shameka, Naquawn; all of Manning, SC; a host of other relatives, family and friends.

Public viewing will be held 4:00PM til 6:00PM Saturday, June 3, 2023 at Hayes F. Samuels, Sr. Memorial Chapel. 114 N. Church St., Manning, SC.

Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, June 4, 2023 at Manning Elememerty School Gymnasium, 311 W Boyce St., Manning, SC 29102. Rev. George P. Windley, Jr., Officiating, Rev Herman Holland, Presiding, elder Henry Lee Hilton, Rev. Michelle Holland and Rev. Constance Walker, Assisting. Burial will follow in the Union Cypress AME Church Cemetry, Manning, SC.

The family is receiving friends 1:00 PM til 8:00 PM at the home of her grandmother, Thelma Hilton, 117 Harvin Ave., Manning, SC.
