Dorothy Rush

Mrs. Dorothy Mae Rush “Dovey” was born October 12, 1940, in Walls, Mississippi, to the late John T. Akins and the late Mrs. Effie Smith Akins.

She was united in holy matrimony to the late Prince E. Rush. To this union, six children were born; two sons, John H. Rush and James Rush, and one grandson, Steven J. Rush, preceded her in death. Dorothy also had three siblings to precede her in death, her sister, Gertrude Jefferson, and two brothers, Jimmy Akins, Sr., and Robert Akins.

She received Christ at an early age and was baptized at Greater Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.

She retired from Shelby County Government after twenty-five years of tremendous service, and she also retired from Oakville Health Care Center.

Dorothy leaves to cherish her memory, sons, Kenneth Rush, and Edward Rush, Sr. (Sharon); two daughters, Barbara Johnson (Marvin) and Annette Rush Shaw; three grandchildren, Edward Jr., Erika Rush and Jessica Massey; three great-grandchildren, Justin Rodger, Emerald Rush and Nova Elise Rush, all of Memphis, Tennessee; three sisters-in-law, Helen Jones & Christine Rush, both of Memphis, Tennessee, and Martha Rush of Louisville, Mississippi; three brothers-in-law, Willie Rush & R. B. Jefferson of Chicago, Illinois, and Dannie Rush of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The family will receive friends Saturday, June 17, 2023 from 11:00am-11:55am with a funeral service to follow at 12:00noon both will be held at RS Lewis & Sons 2944 Walnut Grove Road, Memphis, TN 38111

Interment will be in New Park Memorial Gardens, 3900 Sewanee Rd, Memphis, TN 38109
