Marjorie Gilbert Slaughter went home to be with the Lord on July 5, 2023. She was born October 18, 1951, to the late Morris and Nellie Mae Gilbert in Cuthbert, GA, where she grew up with her brothers and sisters. Marjorie attended the Randolph County school system and was a proud member of the Henderson High School, Class of 1969. Marjorie married Charles Slaughter of Cuthbert, GA, on June 1, 1974. They made their home in Albany, GA, where they had two sons, Kirpatrick and Anthony. After working several years in various professions, Marjorie completed her post-secondary education at Albany Tech and Darton College. She received her teaching certification and began her career in the Dougherty County school system as a Special Education teacher. She served Dougherty Comprehensive High School faithfully for two decades and a brief one-year stint at Albany High School before retiring in 2017 after amassing numerous awards and accolades during her tenure. Marjorie’s passion to serve was also exemplified in her over 30 years of dedication to the American Legion Post 512 of Albany, GA, in the Women’s Auxiliary and the Amourettes where she was recognized with many awards and honors for her many contributions. Marjorie, along with her husband, Charles, were also advocates for voting rights and voter registration. They volunteered as poll workers throughout Dougherty County for many years. But one of the things that Marjorie loved most of all was spending time with family and friends. From family reunions, birthdays, baby showers, class reunions, vacations, conventions, concerts, recitals, to graduations, if she was invited, she would do her best to be in attendance to offer support. From her hospitality, her overwhelming willingness to volunteer, to her enormous heart to always help those she could, Marjorie definitely left her mark on all those whom she interacted with. Marjorie was a devoted and proud Wife, Mother, Grandma, Sister, Auntie, Cousin, Niece, and Friend. We love you, and we will truly miss you! Most importantly, Marjorie was a Christian. She was devoted member of New Salem CME Church, and she also served at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. Marjorie was preceded in death by Charles, her husband of almost 46 years, mother, father, and brother, Dennis Gilbert. She leaves to cherish her memory and celebrate her transition to Glory: her two sons, Kirpatrick Slaughter (Charesse) of Atlanta, GA, and Anthony Slaughter (Stephanie) of Atlanta, GA; niece and “bonus daughter,” LaToya Gilbert of Savannah, GA; grandchildren, Corinthia, Micaiah, Stephon, and Samauri, all of Atlanta, GA; sisters, Christine Gilbert and Mae Francis Gilbert, both of Cuthbert, GA; brothers, William Gilbert of Macon, GA, Joseph Gilbert of St. Petersburg, FL, Fred Gilbert and Welton Gilbert of Elizabeth, NJ, Felton (Beverly) of Somerset, NJ, Morris Gilbert, Jessie (Janace) Gilbert, Charlie W. (Cynthia) Gilbert, and Robert Gilbert, all of Cuthbert, GA; brothers-in-law, Donald Slaughter (Phyllis) of Cuthbert, GA, Grayling Davis of Cuthbert, GA, and Jonathan Gilbert (Janice) of Cuthbert, GA; sisters-in-law, Naomi Jenkins (Bobby) of Cuthbert, GA, Linda Porter of Cuthbert, GA, Janis Gilbert Cuthbert, GA. and Leslie Green (Richard) of Leesburg, GA; aunts, Thelma Lyles of Roselle, NJ, and Annie Ruth Beckworth (Robert) of Winter Garden, FL; uncles, Willie Lyles (Daisy) of Elizabeth, NJ, and Fady Clark of Cuthbert, GA; and a host of numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, as well as many other loving relatives and close friends.
