Sgt. First Class Charles Delano Winters, 76, transitioned peacefully on Saturday, July 8, 2023, surrounded by his family at his bedside.

Charles was born February 4, 1947, in Dunleith, Mississippi and he attended Soldan High School in St. Louis, Missouri before enlisting into the United States Army in 1968 at the age of twenty-one.

Charles was no stranger to achievement during his service where he was awarded two commendation awards, three achievement medals ranging from his leadership training and amazing coordination over a battalion, and a Recruiting badge with one gold star.

He retired as a Sgt. First Class in November 1989, at Fort Gordon where he served twenty-three years. He never stopped learning which was evident from his associate degree in criminal justice studies as well as making the dean's list twice at Phillips Junior College.

He was a loving and respected husband, father, and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Sylvia Winters; mother, Velma Winters; sisters, Deleria Maiden and Lynne Renee; and brother, Ricky Brown.

His legacy will continue to live through his loving wife, Esther Winters; son, Charles Winters, Jr.; daughter, Samantha Winters; four grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.

A celebration of life will be 12 Noon, Friday, July 14, 2023, at Kinsey & Walton Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
