“The steps of a righteous man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way”. Psalms 37:23
Mr. Charles Fred Montgomery’s steps were ordered by the Lord for 95 years. On Tuesday July 11, 2023, the Master Gardener decided to reap the fruit of His harvest Charles transitioned peacefully in his home surrounded by his family.
He was born on January 18, 1928 to the late Forest and Daisy Howell Montgomery. To this union, Charles was one of fourteen children born. He and his siblings were raised and educated in the Six Miles area.
He was a faithful member of Flatrock Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. In the mid 1990s he began to fellowship with his daughter and son in law at Victory Fellowship Center located in Calhoun Georgia.
At the age of 22, his lifelong love story begun. He married Mattie Lou Ragland Montgomery on August 12, 1950. He and Mattie enjoyed 63 wonderful years together prior to God calling her home on December 23, 2013. With a heavy heart, Charles had to say goodbye to his best friend knowing that one day he would see her again. God, in his faithfulness saw fit to bless this union with 8 children. Together they mourned the loss of their youngest son, Benton in 1983. During their 63 years of marriage, Charles worked and retired from Temple Inland in 1993 after 33 years of service.
Charles was considered by many to be a very resourceful man. He was skilled as an excellent and experienced gardener and hunter. Gardening was where he was often found planting rows and rows of produce careful to keep each row straight to avoid seeding overlap. His meticulous bounty was enjoyed by many through soft spoken conversations filled with many seeds of wisdom and guidance, through bundles of vegetables hand picked awaiting your visit, or through a delicious meal cooked on any given day to be enjoyed by everyone that stopped by. As a husband, dad, friend, gardener, hunter, Charles was able to leave a legacy for his 7 children and others that life will bring all types of weather and the ability to adapt to life’s experiences coupled with a willingness to work hard, then life will deliver the fruits that you sow.
Charles leaves to cherish his legacy and memories to his sons and daughters: Mr. Joe Albert (Wanda)Montgomery, Mr. Carlton (Sandra) Montgomery, Ms. Juliett (late Maurice) Simmons, Mr. Elgin (Betty) Montgomery, Mr. Fred (Donna) Montgomery, Mr. Bobby (Audrey) Montgomery, and Ms. Sherrie Montgomery.
