Deacon Fletcher Torbert, Sr. was born September 20, 1931 in Macon County, AL to the late Gene Torbert and Ida Lou Harris-Torbert. He attended school in Macon County, Alabama. His grandchildren called him “Big Daddy”.

Fletcher was married to the love of his life, the late Roberta Butler Torbert on December 25, 1950 and remained faithful to her until parted by death. Fletcher and Roberta obeyed the directions of the Lord and were fruitful and multiplied. God blessed them with five children, three sons and two daughters. One son, Clifford Torbert, preceded him in death.

Deacon Torbert gave his life to the Lord and united with Providence Missionary Baptist Church, Society Hill, Alabama at an early age. He was ordained as Deacon in 1975 under the pastorage of the late Rev. B. L. Upshaw. He loved his church and even in his sickness he came to church and would often sing as he entered or exited the sanctuary, stirring the emotions of those in attendance.

He was a gardener. He grew enough vegetables to feed his family. Many people waited for the Spring or Fall so they could receive fresh corn, collards, peas, sweet potatoes, okra, watermelons, and other seasonal vegetables. The Lord blessed him to be able to feed his family and share with others with what the Lord blessed him with.

He was employed at Bickerstaff Clay Product Company for 44 years, 6 months and 25 days. Then, he retired. He loved the Bickerstaff and Hatcher families and they loved him and his family as well.

Preceded him in death were his parents, Gene and Ida Lou Torbert; four brothers, Ernest Torbert, Jessie Torbert, Cary Torbert and Levones Tolbert; seven sisters, Ida Mae Henderson, Princess Foster, Lucille Borom, Lillie Lowell Miller, Virginia Torbert, Precious McClain and Johnnie Lee Torbert.

Deacon Torbert received his wings August 4, 2023 at 7:13 pm at St. Francis Hospital in Columbus, Georgia with his family by his bedside. Now, he’s resting in the presence of the Lord.

His memories will always be cherished by his two sons, Fletcher, Jr. (Emma) Torbert, Ricky (Gwendolyn) Torbert both of Phenix City, AL; two daughters, Vivian Diane (Dr. George C.) McCulloh, Phenix City, AL; and Gloria Diane (Bruce) Perry, Smiths Station, AL.; one brother-in-law, Nathaniel (Bernice) Tolbert of Tuskegee, AL; two sisters-in-law, Clara Foster of Tuskegee, AL and Margie Tolbert, Shorter, AL; 14 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, 10 great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
