Obituary For Mother Dorothy Watkins Martin

On Saturday, August 26, 2023, Mother Dorothy Watkins Martin, 81, of George Martin Dr., Ridgeway, transitioned from this earthly life to eternal life at SOVAH Health-Martinsville. She was born November 16, 1941, in Virginia, the daughter of the late Willie O. Watkins, and the late Ethel Law Watkins.

In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Martin, Jr., three sisters, Lorene Fulton, Helen Keen, and Glodean Carter; and two brothers, Phillip Watkins, and Howard Watkins.

Dorothy was a faithful member of New Light Baptist Church where she served in a various capacity. She served on the Mother’s Board, the Missionary Board, the Usher Board, sang with the Choir, and the Culinary Committee. She retired from Bassett Walker Knitting Company and Bojangles after many years of service.

Those left to cherish her memories include four daughters, Legaither “Gaye” Dalton, and Devona “Charimane” Moyer both of Ridgeway, VA, Shirley Hairston Kitt of Axton, VA, and Diane Hairston of PA; one son, Ronald Martin of Ridgeway, VA; nine grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; one sister, Florence Amos of Axton, VA; two brothers, Windle Watkins, and Virgil Watkins both of Martinsville, VA; sister-in-law, Leadell R. Watkins of Axton, VA; brother-in-law, Jimmy Carter of Axton, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, church family, and friends.

A visitation service will be held on Saturday, September 2, 2023, at 12:30 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 1 p.m. at the C.R.V. Memorial Chapel at Hairston Funeral Home with Evangelist Nancy Beasley, Eulogist. The burial will follow at Carver Memorial Gardens, 1310 Carver Rd., Martinsville. A public viewing will be held on Friday, September 1, 2023, at Hairston Funeral Home, 301 Fayette St., Martinsville between the hours of 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Other times, the family will be receiving friends at the home, 219 George Martin Dr., Ridgeway, VA.
