Pernell Calhoun Taylor, Jr., 82, of Richmond, departed this life Monday, August 28, 2023. Born in Newport News, Virginia on June 29, 1941 to Pernell and Ruth Taylor, he lived his early years in Charlotte Courthouse and Williamsburg, Virginia before moving to Richmond for his formative years. He graduated from Maggie L. Walker High School and Virginia State College (now University). He began his career in Richmond Public Schools at Benjamin A. Graves Junior High School as an art teacher, then joined the inaugural faculty of John F. Kennedy High School. There he taught physical education, coached track and field and basketball and was director of athletics, serving for over thirty years before retiring. Pernell is survived by his wife of fifty-five years, Patricia Quarles Taylor; two sons, Previn Taylor (Pamela) and Peter Taylor (Tammy); two granddaughters, Paige and Pharrah Taylor; brother, H. Nathaniel Taylor; three nieces, Erica Taylor Haskins, Ashley Taylor-Beierl and Angela Quarles Hughes; nephew, Vincent Quarles III; sister-in-law, Yolanda Burrell Taylor; brother-in-law, Vincent R. Quarles Jr.; goddaughter, Melba Black Swigart; other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd. where viewing will be held from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Tuesday, September 5, 2023 followed by the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Omega Service at 6 p.m. at Scott's Chapel, 116 E. Brookland Park Blvd. followed by the family receiving friends until 7:30 p.m. and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 6. Rev. Brenda Summerset officiating.
