Obituary For Rudolph Melzer Giles, Sr.

Rudolph Melzer Giles, Sr., 90, of Richmond, entered eternal rest September 5, 2023. He was born November 4, 1932, to the late Louis Mack Sweeney and Lela Washington Sweeney. He was the second and youngest child born to this union.

He attended Richmond Public Schools until he left to serve his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged, Rudolph returned and completed his education at Maggie L. Walker High School. He was an orderly/nursing assistant at Richmond Memorial and Richmond Community Hospitals and Children’s Hospital for over 30 years.

In March 1979, Rudolph joined Fifth Baptist Church where he was a faithful member. He was very active in the Men’s Ministry and the Veteran’s Ministry. He loved Jesus and cared deeply for others.

In addition to his parents, Rudolph was also preceded in death by his wife, Delores Taylor Giles. Left to cherish his memory are four sons, Michael I. Taylor (Barbara), Rudolph M. Giles, Jr., Frederick Ricardo Giles and Rev. Angelo E. Giles (Cheryl); eight grandchildren, Camille Taylor, Cynthia Taylor Thomas, Joseph R. Taylor, Bryan Chandler, Sr., Sharitka Giles, Camille Giles, Diamond Giles, and Angelo E. Giles, II; four great-granddaughters, one great-grandson; sister, Emma M. Carter; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the entire staff at Ginter Hall South and Suncrest Hospice Care for their extraordinary service during an extremely difficult time. Also, a special thank you to A Place for Mom, whose expertise assisted us in finding excellent caregivers.

Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd. where viewing will be held from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 13, 2023. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, September 14 at Fifth Baptist Church, 1415 W. Cary Street. Dr. Ricardo Brown officiating. Dr. Earl M. Brown eulogist. Interment Virginia Veterans Cemetery.

The Giles'Family, the Fifth Baptist Church Veterans Ministry membership is saddened to hear about Mr. Rudy Giles'home-going. Rudy was one of our chartered members. He was always front and centered for road trips, conferences, etc. to fully support his Veterans Ministry. He will be greatly missed by the entire membership .May God Bless the family.
