Our deepest condolences to the Powell family. Mrs. Willie Mae was an example to me, (like so many other Women of God of SBC that have gone home)of a sweet mother. She was stunning, elegant and gentle. As a young woman I admired those character traits. She love God and praised Him in music and song. I pray that God continue bless the family, and grant you His peace in this season. Love you Vanessa Bryant Hamilton

Mrs. Willie Mae Powell was much more to my husband (Rev. Evans White) and I than I could ever express. Our hearts fell in love with her the moment she came to First Union Baptist Church in Mechanicsville (around 1977) to be the musician for the Senior Choir (now the Sanctuary Choir),under the pastorate of the late Rev. B.S. Giles, Sr. She brought much poise and excellence to the music ministry there. I was privileged to sing in the choir during her tenure and under her direction led what became my signature song, "Through It All". She greatly influenced my technique of playing the piano and organ as well as my teaching of songs to the choirs I played for. We continued to draw closer over the years, and visited her home many times and she visited ours. She always welcomed us with warmth and love and, without a doubt, would go to the piano and we enjoyed singing together. She always lovingly encouraged and supported us wherever the Lord led us in our ministry and pastorate. Over the years, we kept in touch through calls and visits; whenever I would call her she always greeted me with, "Hello Darling, how are my "other son and daughter doing"? Like many others we enjoyed her singing over the phone, "You Are My Sunshine" and other songs such as "Just Have Faith In God". We still have recordings of her singing those songs. I thank God that we were privileged to visit her at the home of her son, John, and daughter-in-law, Sandra, a few times last year. She always raved about how they treated her like a Queen. "Mom Willie Mae" will always hold a special place in our hearts. We are thankful that we have many of her handmade crafts to remember her by-knitted butterflies and slippers, floral arrangements, fall and Christmas wreaths. We loved her so and will miss her greatly. Our loss is Heaven's gain. Family, our prayers and love will continue to be with you. Rev. Dr. Evans C. and Rose B. White

My sincere condolences to the Powell family. Willie Mae and I graduated from Virginia Randolph and we remain friends ever since. I called her my singing buddy and every time she called me, she always greeted me with the song, You are my shine even though there were other songs as well in which I enjoyed them. Sadly, I will surely miss her but good memories last forever. Shirley A. Huskerson
