Gy Sgt (Ret.) Larry Joe Chatman

Funeral service for Gy Sgt (Ret.) Larry Joe Chatman of Columbus, Georgia will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at Terry’s Mortuary Chapel. Reverend Pearson McGhee will deliver the eulogy. Interment will be in Tallassahatchie Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1-7 p.m. on Friday, November 10, 2023.

On August 16, 1962, Larry Joe Chatman was the first of four children born to the union of Charles Chatman and Mary Lois (neé Stamps) Chatman in Talladega, Alabama.

Mr. Chatman united with Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Anniston, Alabama at an early age. Since residing in Columbus, Georgia, Larry worshipped at Antioch Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Anniston High School. He continued his education at Jacksonville State University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice in 1984 and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science in 1997. While he was a student at Jacksonville State University, Larry was initiated into the Xi Xi Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Larry was committed to a life of service. He served in the Alabama Army National Guard from November 1979 – December 1985. In December 1985, Larry enlisted in the United States Marine Corp where he served honorably until November 2006. During his time in the Marine Corp, Larry was a Legal Service Specialist and received his paralegal certification in 1993. From September 1993 - December 1996, he served as a recruiter for the Marine Corp. After retiring from the military, Larry was employed with Xerox Corporation as a solutions and sales executive from May 2007- June 2012.

Larry will be sorely missed by his daughter, Shawaana Evans of Jacksonville, Alabama; one sister, Vickye Chatman Suttle of Talladega, Alabama; three brothers, Charles T. Chatman, Jr. (Thelma Garrett) and Kenneth Ray Chatman of Talladega, Alabama and Dontae Chevis of Anniston, Alabama; a special niece, Kaneshia “Nikki Poo” Suttle; special nephew, Delaurio “Tu” Suttle; great nephew, Amir McMillian; a special aunt, Elizabeth Chatman; two special uncles, John Chatman and Nathaniel (Ethel Mae) Stamps; mother-in-law, Ada Evans; brother-in-law, Michael (Angela) Evans; and a host of other relatives and friends.

On Thursday, November 2, 2023, Larry was called to rest from his labors. He was preceded in passing by his wife, Gwendolyn Y. Chatman; his parents, Charles Chatman and Mary Lois Chatman; grandparents, Mary Francis Stamps, Taylor Garrett, Sr., Mary Lou (neé Jones) Chatman and Samuel Chatman, Sr.; a brother, Jerome Twyman; and father-in-law, Isaiah Evans.
