Charlie Shaffner Hines, Jr.

A home going celebration for Mr. Charlie Shaffner Hines, Jr., 79, of Grady will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at Holy Hill COOLJC. Elder Gary Smith will officiate. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Hines will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m. on Friday, December 1, 2023, at the funeral home.

Charlie S. “Chuck” Hines Jr. was born to the late Charlie S. Hines and Luvenia Hines on July 31, 1944, in Lincoln, Alabama.

Mr. Hines joined Holy Hill Church as a child and has remained a member until his untimely passing. He grew up in Lincoln, Alabama where he met and married Doretha Powell of Leeds, Alabama and to this union four children were born. This union was later dissolved. Chuck later moved to Detroit, Michigan where he met Carol Rittenhour of New York and to this union two children were born. Carol passed away in 1991 due to illness and Charlie moved back to Lincoln where he met the late Carolyn Cole. They were together until her untimely passing in March, 1998. In 2001, Charlie met and married Cynthia Odom of Birmingham, Alabama and dissolved this union in 2020. In June 2020, Charlie moved to Troy, Alabama to be close to his son Gregory at which time he met and married his loving wife, Lillian Gamble in October 2021. Together they lived a happy and fruitful life until his passing on November 23, 2023. He was preceded in passing by one son, Michael Hines of Leeds, Alabama.

Charlie leaves to mourn: his devoted wife, Lillian Hines of Grady, Alabama; four sons, Gregory Hines (Shontina) of Troy, Alabama, Stephen Hines (Aerial) of Bartlett, Tennessee, Nathaniel Rittenhour of New York and Lemeul Rittenhour of New York; two daughters, Tonya Hines of Birmingham, Alabama and Latoya Cole of Pell City, Alabama; two stepsons, Clanford Johnson of Greensboro, North Carolina and Lewis Johnson (Nakia) of Troy, Alabama; three stepdaughters, Jerrica Kinsey of Dothan, Alabama, Deneshia Diaz (Nixon) of Duluth, Georgia and Tayaqua Cowart of Grady, Alabama; three sisters, Shirley Clark of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Evelyn Orr of Lincoln, Alabama and Mary Fairfax (Clay) of New York; two brothers, James Hines(Gloria) of Lincoln, Alabama and Billy Hines (Claudette) of Fayetteville, North Carolina; three brothers-in-law, Robert Gamble (Jessie) of Grady, Alabama, Tony Gamble (Audrey) of Troy, Alabama and Johnny Gamble of Colorado Springs, Colorado; thirty one grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
