Deacon Billy Dewayne Martin, Sr. 63 of Cascade, VA passed Friday, November 24, 2023. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at Perry Spencer Funeral Home Chapel, Eden, NC beginning at 2:00 p.m. At other times: the family will receive friends at 792 Cascade Rd. Lot 5, Casdcade, VA.

Deacon Billy DeWayne Martin, Sr. departed this life on Friday, November 24, 2023, at his home in Cascade, VA. He was born on December 5, 1959 in Eden, NC to the late Charlie S. Murphy and the late Ora Elizabeth Martin.

Billy spent most of his life in Pittsylvania County and attended Tunstall High School in Dry Fork, VA. Deacon Martin was baptized in the name of Jesus at an early age at The Star of Bethlehem Way of the Cross Church by the late Apostle Richard W. Adams. There he was filled with the Holy Ghost and served faithfully. He was a member of a gospel singing group and played the drums and loved to sing.

Deacon Martin was employed with Fieldcrest Cannon Mills for several years until their closing which led him to relocate to Alexandria, VA. While residing in Northern Virginia, Deacon Billy was employed as a bowling technician, which allowed him to join a number of bowling leagues. Bowling, football, basketball and going to the race track, were some of his passions. He loved to laugh and joke around with others and never met a stranger. He always had a smile to give to others even when he was hurting.

Deacon Billy returned to Cascade, VA in the mid 2000’s. He was an active member of Alpha Faith Temple Church, Martinsville, VA under Bishop Waverly Cousin, Jr. He was ordained a deacon at Greater Grace Temple in Walnut Cove, NC under the leadership of Bishop Bobby Ray Simmons. He was an active member of Greater Grace Temple until his health started to decline. He returned to Alpha Faith Temple Church, Martinsville, VA and served on the Deacon Board and sang in the choir. He enjoyed helping others and making a difference. He was very particular and cared about his appearance.

Deacon Billy Martin was also preceded in death by his brother, Charlie S. Martin.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his son; Billy DeWayne Martin, Jr., two sisters; Velma C. Skinner of Washington, DC and Vanessa Perkins of Danville, VA, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends whom he loved so much.
