Eva Wilkins Hicks

Eva Mae was born on December 16, 1927, in Halifax County North Carolina. She grew up in the town of Weldon - Whitehill community. She graduated from Weldon High School in 1946. Eva received her Bachelor of Science degree from Shaw University in 1950. She then married Irving Douglas Jackson of Culpeper VA. And in Culpepper she began her teaching career as a Home Economics teacher. After her husband’s death. She moved to Richmond VA and met and married Thomas Hicks.

In Richmond, Eva worked initially for the city of Richmond Recreation and Parks department and in 1957 she began her teaching career in the elementary schools of the Richmond Public School System. In 1974 Eva received her Master of Science degree from Virginia State University in Petersburg VA. She then went on to postgraduate study at Harvard University in Cambridge MA. Upon her return she began her career as an elementary school Guidance Counselor and in 1993 retired from Richmond Public Schools.

Belonging to the church and having a church family was especially important to Eva. After retiring she worked diligently in the church, serving on committees and becoming a lay reader. Eva served as Recording Secretary for the Executive Board for the State of Virginia though the Episcopal Church Women. Likewise, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated was particularly important to her and she held committee positions including program planning for the “Girls Night” at the Richmond Police Academy, of which she later became a Citizen Police Officer. She rarely missed the Delta Convention. A resolute volunteer with the city police department's neighborhood watch program. Eva was also a member and sponsor of community organizations. She was especially fond of the Botanical Gardens and in later years would go there to enjoy the rose garden and a warm bowl of vegetable soup. Eva loved socializing with friends and family, listening to gospel, swing, and jazz music sometimes even dancing to one of her favorite tunes.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, December 15 at St. Philips Episcopal Church, 2900 Hanes Ave. Her remains will be forwarded to Weldon, NC for interment.
