In Loving Memory of Zachary Lewis Gemmell

Wilmington, North Carolina - Zachary Lewis Gemmell, a dedicated and hardworking individual who spent his career at the Riverbend Warehouse, managing cotton baling, passed away on December 16, 2023.at the age of 69. Zachary, known to friends and family as "Zach," peacefully departed this world. Born in Wilmington, North Carolina, Zach was the beloved son of John and Mildred Poindexter Gemmell, who preceded him in death. He was also predeceased by his brother, John Gemmell Jr., leaving behind a legacy of enduring brotherhood. Zach's memory will be forever cherished by his brothers William Gemmell and Andrew Gemmell, with wife Emma Alice Gemmell, of Smithfield, North Carolina. Also surviving are nephew John Tyler Gemmell, with wife Janet and his daughter Caroline Gemmell, niece Meg Gemmell Sperry and her children Wren and Vann Sperry all of Wilmington, North Carolina.

In addition to his immediate family, Zach had a deep connection with his cousins; Scott Poindexter, Fred Jones Poindexter, Will Green Poindexter, and Robert Vann Poindexter and their families in Greenwood, Mississippi. They helped launch his lifelong career and stayed true to him throughout his life providing caring support.

Zach enjoyed the simple pleasures of life and his love for feral cats was also well-known. He had a special affection for these furry wild friends; they brought him comfort and companionship especially towards the end of his life. He will be remembered not only for his dedication to his work and the love he shared with his family but also for the unique interests that brought joy to his life. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his soul find eternal peace and may his memory be a source of comfort and inspiration to all who knew and loved him.

Graveside services will be held in Wilmington, North Carolina at a future date for family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to your local Humane Society.
