Harriet Elaine Gleaton Nesmith, 47, peacefully transitioned on Monday, December 25, 2023 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. She was born on June 28, 1976 to the late Harry Lane and Martha Nell Gleaton in Seneca, SC.
Harriet attended Pendleton and Seneca Schools. She went on to further her education at Claflin University in Orangeburg, SC. After college, Harriet worked as a DJJ officer and later joined the Urban League where she was assigned to Union County High School. During that time, she met the love of her life, Gary L. Nesmith. She was currently working for the Department of Health and Human Health Services (DHHS) as a LTC Eligibility Coach (Trainer).
Harriet was married to Gary on May 19, 2007. To this union four children were born, three of whom preceded her in death: Tamara Michelle, Kristen London and Kaitlyn MaKenzie Nesmith.
Harriet was a huge advocate for her children and protected them at any cost.
She was a devoted member of First Worship Church where she served on the Choir as she possessed a strong alto voice, Stewardess Board and Director of the Children's Choir. Harriet enjoyed singing, talking and counseling people.
In addition to her loving husband, Gary, left to cherish fond and loving memories are: her son, Drake; her brother/son, Alonzo (Jobreyia) Gleaton of Whitmire; her father and mother-in-law, Rand and Bobbie Nesmith of Andrew, SC; her sisters-in-law, Gail Pressley of Kingstree, SC and Attia Nesmith of Andrews, SC; her special brothers-in-law, Howard Giles (Juanita) and Balvin Dorsey (Ruby); her special nieces, Andrea Gleaton and Salaysia Nesmith; her six nieces; her four great-nieces; her great-nephew; her godson, Malachi Johnson; her seven aunts, Bobbie Jean Rice, Mary E. Richardson, Betty Hardy, Jannie (William) Acker, Mamie Norwood (Allen), Tacoa Johnson (James) and Elizabeth Holland; her three uncles, John Henry Lee (Effie), Izaaiah Lee (Maggie) and Tommy Lee; and a host of cousins and friends.
A Celebration of the Life of Harriet Elaine Gleaton Nesmith will be held on Sunday, December 31, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at First Worship Church, 504 N. Church Street, Spartanburg, South Carolina. Livestream will be available via Facebook on the TEEFERGUSONREPORT.
Burial will be held on Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Mark AME Church, 21 Ransom Road, Kingstree, South Carolina.
