I held on as long as I could.

I thought I needed to stay for so many reasons.

But the Lord knew it was time for me to leave.

HE GRACIOUSLY WELCOMED ME HOME.

Very quietly and peacefully on Monday, December 25, 2023, Almighty God, In His infinite wisdom, gently closed the eyes of our beloved Mother, CORINE HUGHES, as she entered into her eternal rest, at the age of 104 years young. Affectionately called “Puddin,” was the daughter of the late Eddie “Buck” and Lizzie Davis Gill, born on October 20, 1919 in Vance County, NC. She was also preceded in death by her children- James Bullock and Patricia Lamison and siblings- Annie, Mary Ben, Edward, Jimmy, Ethel, John Henry, and Willie Gill.

Corine was baptized and joined Greenwood Baptist Church, Warrenton, NC at an early age.

She was married to the late Haywood Bullock and to this union four children were born- Cora, Ernestine, James, and Haywood.

After leaving Virginia, Corine lived briefly in New Jersey and New York before finally settling down in Philadelphia, PA.

Corine later united in marriage to the late William Hughes in 1950 and to this union three children were born- Alonzo, William, and Gail.

Corine was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church, Philadelphia, PA where she served as a Deaconess and Usher. After she moved back to Virginia, she joined Roanoke United Church of Christ, Palmers Spring, VA.

Corine worked as a domestic worker for many years before retiring and later returned home to Palmer Springs, VA.

Corine loved listening to “old time” gospel music. In church she would say, “I can’t sing and harmonize, maybe I can’t say my words right, but I can shout and dance” and that she did. When Corine came to church, you had church. Her favorite color was blue and her favorite songs were“Precious Lord,” “Amazing Grace,” and “I Shall Wear a Crown.” Her hobbies were sewing and gardening. She loved visiting with her sister, nieces, and nephews.

NEVER TO BE FORGOTTEN: Corine leaves to cherish her memory, her children- Deacon Cora Fogg, South Hill, VA; Ernestine Bullock, Bronx, NY; Haywood(Pernola) Bullock, Long Island, NY; Alonzo (Lorretta) Hughes, Philadelphia, PA; William (Lisa) Hughes, Dover, DE; and Dr. Gail H. Brogdon, Newark, DE; sister- Bertha White, Boydton, VA; grandchild she reared- Sheryl Bullock; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
