Eddie Smith, Jr.

Eddie Smith, Jr., 75, of Memphis, Tennessee, passed away on January 24, 2024. He was born on January 1, 1949, in Marks, Mississippi. Eddie was known affectionately as "Hammer, Slick, Frat, and Godfather" and was a loving husband, father, uncle, grandfather, brother, and friend.

Eddie had a vibrant personality and a great sense of humor. He had nicknames for almost everyone, which was a testament to how much he liked you. He deeply loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. Eddie was an avid traveler who cherished exploring new places. He was very well-read and abreast in medical practices and took pleasure in knowing more than the doctors.

In his leisure time, Eddie played tennis and was a competitive bowler. Additionally, after retirement, he thought himself to be a master chef from his numerous hours of watching the Food Network and various other cooking shows. Eddie would then offer advice to the cooks in the family on how they could improve their meals.

Eddie received his education from Booker T. Washington and completed his studies at LeMoyne Owen College, majoring in Biology. While attending LeMoyne, he joined Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

Eddie had an illustrious career in the pharmaceutical industry, accumulating over 45 years of experience. He worked for Upjohn, Tap, Abbott and Abbvie pharmaceutical companies leaving a lasting impact in his field. He received the Excalibur Award in 1999 and 2002 for being in the top 1% of Abbott Pharmaceutical sales. In 2009, he was recognized as an all-star for an outstanding performance in the pharmaceutical products division. Eddie was a 2013 founding employee of Abbvie Pharmaceuticals.

While in New Orleans, their spiritual roots were planted at Bethany United Methodist Church where he served as a mentor, trustee, treasurer and wherever else he was needed. Upon returning to Memphis, he continued his spiritual journey by serving at Centenary, supporting the ministries of the health fair, food pantry and other church ministries. His passion and generosity were only superseded by his works at the church. He served as the “First Gentleman” of the church and the Metro District. Additionally, Eddie was also a board member of the Wesley Senior Ministries.

Eddie leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Rev. Dr. Deborah B. Smith, and his children, Kasia Smith-Alexander (Ernest), Kimberly Eason (JeKorie), and Eddie Smith, III (Tambitha). He also leaves behind his beloved brother, Archie Reems. Eddie adored his grandchildren, Kaleb Smith, Kyle Smith, Cody Alexander and his granddaughter, Shyla Eason. Eddie leaves behind a host of sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eddie Smith, Sr. and Alvin Benson, and his loving sister, Rosetta Miller.

Despite all the challenges, setbacks and adversities, Eddie continued to be joyful, tenacious and hopeful. He fought the good fight.

The family will receive friends Saturday, February 3, 2024 from 10:00am-11:55am with a Celebration of Life to follow at 12:00 noon both will be held at Centenary United Methodist Church, 584 E. McLemore Ave, Memphis, Tennessee 38106
