Youngstown- William (Bill) Howard Wells, fondly known as Billy to his friends, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2024, in the early morning hours. Born on October 5, 1949, in Williamson, West Virginia, he was the youngest of six children born to Frances Finch and Ralph Wendell Wells, Sr.
From his early years, Bill showed exceptional talent in sports, particularly basketball. He excelled at Williamson High School earning all state honors and graduating in 1967. He continued his passion for the game through his collegiate career, starting at West Virginia University and graduating from Youngstown State University in 1972 with double masters degrees in business and administration.
In 1967, Bill met the love of his life, Penelope (Penny) Whorton, and the two were married in Youngstown, Ohio, on June 15, 1973. Their union lasted 50 remarkable years, blessed with two sons and four grandchildren.
Bill was known for his vibrant personality and love for spending time with family and friends. He had a profound impact on many as a strict coach and teacher who cared deeply about the well-being and growth of his students and players. Family reunions were a cherished tradition, where Bill relished in storytelling, card games, and savoring his favorite whiskey late into the night.
Later in life, Bill found immense joy in his grandchildren, taking pride in their achievements while always maintaining a competitive spirit, especially during card games or tonk sessions, where he would take their spare change.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents, brother Bobby Joe Wells, and sister Goldia Sue McCall. He is survived by his devoted wife Penny, sons Preston (Melissa) and Chris (Beth), grandchildren Ashlynn, Mason, Ryan, Logan, and Austin Blay, brothers Ronald Wells, Ralph Wells, Jr., John Wells, and Malcolm Wells, along with numerous cherished nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Bill's legacy of love, laughter, and mentorship will forever be treasured by those who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of being part of his life.
A celebration of Bill's life, officiated by Rev. Dr. Lewis W. Macklin II & Rev. Father John Paul Robles, will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2024 at 11AM at Boardman United Methodist Church, with family visitation at 10AM.
