Doris Woodard Booker, 87, of Beeville, Texas, formerly of Richmond, Virginia, died Tuesday, February 27, 2024 at The Birchwood Nursing Home in Beeville, Texas.
Doris was born December 13, 1936 in Portsmouth, Virginia to her loving parents, Edward Delmar Woodard, Sr. and Clarine Woodard. She was a 1954 graduate of I.C. Norcom High School in Portsmouth. Her thirst for knowledge led her to continue her education and achieve a master’s degree in English from Virginia State University where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. She led a fulfilling and successful career path and dedicated numerous years sharing her knowledge and wisdom to countless students and peers alike. She retired from Virginia State University in Ettrick, Virginia.
After retirement, she along with her sister, Sylvia, took many road trips and enjoyed traveling together.
Doris found joy as a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Richmond. Her faith was an integral part of her life, guiding her actions and bringing her peace and comfort.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward Delmar Woodard, Sr. and Clarine Woodard and three sisters, Audrey Lord, Constance Council and Diane Woodard.
In the hearts of those who survive Doris are her beloved daughter, Angela (Jeffery) Rodriguez of Beeville, Texas; two sisters, Sylvia L. Boston of Hampton, Virginia and Beverly (Marion) Blount of Mahopac, New York; three brothers, Edward D. Woodard, Jr. of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Richard L. (Marjorie) Woodard of Carrollton, Virginia and Rev. Dennis A. (Susie) Woodard, Sr. of Richmond, Virginia; two grandsons, Brandon Edward Harris (Erin) of Richmond, Virginia and Brian Christopher Harris (Danielle) of Beeville, Texas; four great-grandchildren, Christopher and Dayanna Harris of Amelia, Virginia, Brandon Harris Jr. and Noah Harris of Richmond, Virginia; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd. where viewing will be held from 10 a.m until 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2024 followed by the family receiving friends from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Scott's Chapel, 116 E. Brookland Park Blvd. Funeral services will be held 12 noon Wednesday, March 13 at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 216 W. Leigh Street. Rev. Brenda Summerset, officiating. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
