Ms. Betty Jean Dunlap departed her earthly life on Thursday, March 7, 2024, at the age of 84. Betty was a longtime resident of High Point and later moved to Winston Salem to be with her family after experiencing health issues. She was born in Anson County to the late Merritt Short, Sr., and Willie Mae Moses Short.
Betty completed her education and graduated from Morven High School. Later in life, she moved to Thomasville, NC, where she entered the workforce. Betty worked for many years at Silver Knit Hosiery before landing employment at High Point Regional Hospital, where she worked until her retirement. On October 17, 1965, Betty married Arthur Lee Dunlap, and they were together until Arthur's passing in December 1995.
Betty's journey was one of faith, kindness, and love. She accepted Christ into her life and became a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Ray McCluney. Betty continued her walk with Christ and became a member of Word of Life under the leadership of Pastor Ronald Lee Diggs. Betty became a member of Spirit of Life Ministries, led by Pastor Phillip Biggs, where she stayed until she moved to Winston-Salem, NC. Betty was a prayer warrior who loved the Lord and treated everyone she met with kindness! Those who knew her would attest to her loving smile and a big heart, which she shared with family, friends, and whoever she met. Even during her final days, she remained a source of inspiration, finding joy in her faith and the love she shared with those around her. She always found a way to put a smile on her face!
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her three brothers, Em, Sam, and Leroy Short.
Betty is survived by her son, Bobby (Stacey) Short of High Point, NC; daughter, Tina (William) Foster of Winston Salem, NC; stepdaughter, Emmaree Dunlap of Connecticut; two brothers, Merritt (Yvonne) Short and Johnny Lee Short both of High Point, NC; two sisters, Sarah Staton of Massachusetts and Linda McCormick of High Point, NC; one sister-in-law, Doll Massey of Lexington, NC; ten grandchildren, Melody (Elijah) Askins and, Bobby (Gia) Short, Jr. both of Georgia; Stephen (Tiffany) Short of High Point, NC; Antonio, Kalene, Ledariah of Winston Salem, NC; and Xavier Short of High Point, NC; David, Melanie, and Anthony of Connecticut; ten great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; one special cousin, Edith Wilson and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral service will be held Sunday, March 17, 2024 at 4:30 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Service Chapel. The family will receive friends at the chapel from 4:00 p.m. until 4:30 p.m.
